Just got this email from a bloke who contacted me about my RR forsale on
difflock....
What the ****!!

Thanks for the mail.I am so glad to read from you and i really appreciate
your quick response,i will not be able to come for the look but you can
email me pics, also the price is very okay and reasonble with me. I will
like to bring to your notice a quick reminder on the method of payment and
shipping. Nevertheless, this business requires honesty and transparency hope
i will be able to trust you with my money. However, my freight forwarder
who'll be coming to your location to pick it up ,has sent me an email, that
they are ready for the pickup anytime, before they will be coming for the
pick up also i have contacted my client to issue you the payment he will
issue you the payment which as the Total sum of £3000. in which you will
have to deduct the money for the Range Rover and the excess funds will be
deposietd to the shipping company who will be coming for the pick up from
your place Via Western Union Money Transfer. Once they have payment they
will be coming for the pick up from your place. without the funds they will
not be able to make all necessary arrangement for the pick up. If this is
OK, get back to me with your contact details as follows:
1. Name:As it should be written on the check.
2. Address:
3. Cell phone Number and Home Phone Number:
So that the payment can be done soon. Your prompt response will be
highly appreciated.
Thanks and God bless you,
Regards.

If the 3k is enough, or more than you actually offered the RR for sale, then
I'd be tempted to take and deposit the payment ... then stall for a few
weeks to make sure it's cleared properly, play him at his own game ...
You'll soon know if it's a scam ... ;)

No you wont. It can take six months for a cheque to bounce.

It can take anytime - a cheque never actually "clears" in the sense
that non-banking types in the real world understand it. And the
bank can withrdaw the money from your account without notice, and
without your consent, at any time, without a thought of the consequences
to you - all because *they* made a mistake. Nice people.

There's a very good reason that the collective noun for 'banker' is a
'wunch'

We have a check for £8000 on the pin board, same deal, recieved for a
vehicle that was sale for £3000, needless to say we did nothing with it.
Search on google under this sort of thing and you will find all sorts of
advice. We rang the local police who said something along the lines of 'yes
and....' still got the cheque though, it is useless as it can be reported
stolen at any time and funds withdrawn from an active account. Opening a new
account, banking clearing cashing and closing is tantamount to knowingly
handling fraudulent funds and not looked on to cleverly in a court. Ignore
and move on, but dont be surprised to still recieve the draft in the post.
We did and we had already told the scammer to sling their hook. Makes a neat
souvenir!

regards,

MArk

Pay it in, acknowledge it'll be taken back, skim the interest?

Not necessarily - unless it can be clearly _proven_ as an _act_ of
fraud - in other words, with the intention of defrauding the bank -
note, 'bank'. The reality of course, is that it's fecking impossible
to open a new bank account these days without sooo much ID and checks
being carried out that you'd be barking mad to try to do so in order
to get a mere 8K - Courts are not going to be your worry, but you'll
suddenly and mysteriously find all sorts of nastyness going on in
terms of your credit worthiness - whether it ever goes to Court, or
not.

Can't you just go cash a cheque, like for 'cash' with the bank who
issued it in the first place (not the branch, kust the bank).
You can here.

Can't you just pop into one of those cheque cashing places (that have
cropped up all over the place recently) pay a couple of percent in
commission and walk away with the cash? Never tried one so don't really
know how they work ...

Almost as regular as the ones asking for help to transfer billions of
dollars out of Africa/Eastern Europe.

If something seems too good to be true - it probably is. Your vehicle
disappears and 6 months later you get a call from the bank to say the
international money transfer turned out to be a fraud, and guess who has
to pay up.
