TD5 wastegate sticking open,

Suggestions for best freeing agent and then preventative?
I'm thinking Plusgas then ceramic lube....

Please dont say copperslip I wont use it....lol
 
Plusgas is ideal. The best way to do it is remove the actuator arm fully from the turbo and then work on the wastegate pivot - it needs to be very loose - should be able to flick it up and down.

A ceramic lube might work, I have never bothered with any lube as I always assumed it got so hot that nothing would stay there long anyway.
 
Love a bit of pluggas! thanks @tom1979, maybe just carbon build up / rust and once free should be ok, its intermittant, has happened twice in last 2 months, and only for 1-2 mins after startup so reading the signs, maybe cos im in a hrry and have turned off engine too quick, maybe need to let the turbo spool down before turning off etc need to sort it this weekend either way!
 
Shorter rod = higher boost. However if you set it too short you will get wastegate creep as you're actually adjusting the pre-load not the volume.
 
Beside the turbo's wastegate spigot there are cases when the valve's rod is sticking cos it can be full of muck from the oily gas and the spring's "travel" is affected. Happened to me... you can find new actuators for decent price so IMO better replace the old one and you can cut it in half then to see how it was inside, my bad that i didnt take a pic from mine to show how dirty it was inside

the aftermarket actuators don't seem to last long, even the £30 ones. the only decent ones I have seen come fitted to a Garrett turbo. The only aftermarket one that lasted was from Forge Motorsport which was a serviceable one.

I cant contradict that. I fitted the forge myself when the old one failed but i didnt recommend it being quite expensive... aamof a friend of mine fitted an aftermarket about 2 years ago and didnt complain yet... though it has 5 years warranty and the seller a high positive feedback so maybe worth a try
 
Fitted a Forge today but the actuator rod needed the end bit turning down so far it barely caught on the end of the thread - what have I done wrong? This is with the wastegate fully closed.

Not sure, best to speak to Forge they are apparently quite helpful. When I fitted mine I had no issues and we now sell them and no issues with any of those either.
