Have had a read of the other threads that mention this...but here goes.

couple of nights ago, during a quick trip across town,
the HDC warning Light (the one with the (!) ) and the Traction Control warning light illuminated and i was thinking....hmm, whats that all about..
but it was icy so i concentrated on driving.

when i made the reurn journey 15 mins later..the lights did their normal thing and then went out. and a quick check of HDC showed it was working ok.

Anyway, last night during a 200mile trip they came on again...
(motorway driving, so not much braking)
and refuse to switch-off. This morning they are still on.

HDC does not function, the Gearknob switch appears to do nothing.
(i have checked the wiring..as i had repaired that a few months ago..)

ABS is still working just like normal. (which is nice)

After reading the threads that mention this type of fault....
Brake Lights are ok and come on when you would expect.
all the other electrical systems seem to be fine.

so what should i try next.
i was wondering what could affect TC enough to upset it without upsetting ABS ? surely that should rule out the wheel speed sensors.

but my understanding is that all the 'clever' bits, ABS, TC, EBD and HDC are all functions of the ABS computer relying on the Wheel Sensors.

The only thing i could think of was that for some reason it thinks the brakes are hot....and has disabled HDC. but i couldn't see why that might affect TC while leaving ABS working.

history bits...
I had new front brake pads in December...done about 2500 miles since.
I did have 2 new tyres last week (Rears) though have done about 500miles before the problem occured.

is there anything 'special' about the rear wheels, brake hubs, sensors ?
that a ham-fisted tyre fitter might have clonked ?

any advice appreciated....
and NO i havn't been through any puddles !

Cheers
Richard.

hi
It sounds like you are having the same problem i had. i have a td4 on an 02 plate. our problem started after it had been in for a service at a landrover garage. The HDC, traction control light and our abs light came on, we also lost some power from the engine. you dont say if yours is 1.8/v6 or 2.0l/td4. it turned out to be our brake ECU which was at fault. each time they hooked it up it came back with no fault, i complained to landrover assitance and made the garage keep it untill it was sorted.

hope this could help you.

It doesn't sound like a wheel sensor but I guess it possibly is. I know these can be intermittent and do what you describe but a few things would lead to it not being the case.

Have you tried pulling over and turning off the vehicle and then starting it back up again with a 10 second or so break? Is it still there?

Updates...

OK, it is a 02, TD4.
makes no difference if i stop, start, etc..been 3 days now still the same.

Last night the Brake lights all stopped working.

So, brake light switch to start with then,
anybody know the part number ?

thanks
Richard.

well, took the brake light switch out yesterday....
and yes it is very unhappy...'crunchy' when it moves...

tried pulling the plunger out as described elsewhere....
made no difference..but it was definetly not a happy switch.

located a supplier and ordered one. (12quid including delivery)
but wont arrive till tuesday or weds next week.

so i thought....what the hell..perhaps i can wire something up to at least switch the brake lights on when I want them...rather than risking some bozo rear ending me, or getting pulled for no lights'

anyway to cut a very long story short....
it was broken inside..and i was able to bodge it by soldering a bent staple to one of the contacts...which the slides up and down with the plunger...

i didnt really expect it to, but to my surprise....the brake lights now work.
the warning light were still on though..

anyway...i ended up sticking shiny 'silverfoil' tape to the spare tyre so i could 'see' the brake lights working from the rearview mirror, just in case.

anyway the warning lights stayed on.....until today...drove about 200 miles..
then they went out..and everything started behaving normally again.
HDC , TC, ABS all seem to be working fine..

I was wondering about the computer and if it might need to be 'reset' after changing the switch over for a new one. but cant account for why the warning lights are now out. anyone know if it resets itself after a set period of time or something ?

anyway..all i have to do now is swapout the bodged one for the new one when it arrives. and hopefully problem solved.

thanks for all suggestions.

Richard.

Wow same thing has happened with my 2003 freelander. Both lights are on all of the time. Although my wipers do not work sometimes. So then I do.. do the pull to the side of the road method and stop the engine then start it again then the wipers will work. In my estimation I think when you do have this problem it somehow messes with the electrical system. Weird stuff I guess. I will have to check the brake lights as well. Thanks for the tip!

Dumb question... Where is the brake light switch? Also I have noticed that the bottom brake lights are not working. But the above tire and the upper brake lights are working. Maybe that might be the problem as well.
