Hey guys

Probly buying a winch next month, (I did a search but couldn't find anything...probly my fault...so sorry if this has been covered before:eek:) I've decided on a electric as it makes a little more sense for the amount I'll use it.

But I like to think I don't buy **** (tis why I got a LR!:p), so I've narrowed it down to Warn or Superwinch and a 9-9500lbs one, but you're thoughts and opinions about which is better would be much appreicated

Wots wrong with the Trifor ones?

Someone said ere a little while back that electric winches are for posers.
 
Nothing I guess...tho I've just noticed that I didn't put "any other sugestions would be good" at the end oops.

I just heard form a few people (not on here tho) that you should get warn, superwinch or not at all, as the other makes could land you in some very hot water, which in fairness could be complete bollocks :rolleyes:.

I don't mind forking out the extra for a warn etc, i just want a winch that I can rely on.

Tirfors are better than winches because -
1. They are cheaper.
2. They still work when your battery is flat and / or your engine is dead.
3. They can pull your vehicle in any direction (even sideways).
4. They can easily be transferred from vehicle to vehicle.
5. They never break down or burn out.
6. You can use it away from your vehicle for purposes other than recovery.
7. You can leave it at home when you're sure you won't need it and avoid carrying that weight around.

Like I keep saying - winches is fer pouseurs.
Tirfors is fer serious off-roaders.
 
Ok thanks Treworgey 90 it def. something to think about

Coupe of counters tho;

1. I don't mind spending the money, that's what it's for
2. I intend to double up the batteries
3. Very true!
4. Isn't too much of a concern to be honest
5. tis why I wanted to buy a new warn or superwinch
6. I've no other uses, execpt my quad, but we sold it a while back

I'd rather it was bolted to my vehicle as I seem to do quite a lot of "sper of the moment off roading (about 30 mins from home) which quite often is stopped by "if I had a winch I'd have a go at that, but if we get stuck we're ****ed". and I don't want it kicking about in the back all the time, as it's quite often filled to the roof with stuff, or has 6 people in it!

So can you see my reasons for wanting a winch as oppose to a Tirfor, believe me I've considered one, but the winch just seemed a better option considering what I want from a "recovery device"
 
SPT the olds here dont like the thought of leccy winches... ignore then. tre has a good point with tirfors. my mate picked one up off ebay for 28quid. bargain. they are however very heavy, slow, and you will sweat your bollox off using it!

warn and superwinch are prob the best to go for. as you have said, your willing to pay out so why not!

few things to consider:

1: how heavy and modified is your landy? if your running 35" MT's and its loaded with tank/diff/steering guards then its a) going to be very heavy and b) if you cant get out with those tyres you must be SERIOUSLY stuck :)

therefore a 9000lb may struggle to get you out of trouble.

2: get a model where you can take off the solonoid. manufacturers may say that the solonoid pack is sealed from the elements. but if you do alot of wading and mud bogging then water will find its way into the winch and ruin the conections. by mounting the solonoid pack up out of the way (Under bonnet) it will be out of the water alot more than if it was still on your bumper. i dont like the new "bridge" style superwinches.

3: get a good strong bumper. not one thats just been tacked together! also check your chassis mounting points.

cheeky sod how old do you think i am?

Anyone who pulls or lifts things for a living such as riggers, erectors and such like will allways use something that is mechanicaly strong and doesnt require an external power source - other than manpower.

All those eon landies you see running around (thems is the men who fix the over heads) with front and rear winches allways have a trifor in the back as a backup. Leccy winches are easier to use but when they break they usually break in ways that can only be fixed with replacement parts.

Most eon and the like peeps are allowed to specify their own new vehicle fit out as it is them that knows the job and has to live with the equipment, any of them who work even slightly off the beaten track will just use the Trifor.

what ya should have said was that the "weak" dont like mechanical winches
 
hi griffdowg, yea I'd figured that, lol

1) it's got steering and diff gaurds that I put on, and I think it's got a tank gaurd (a big thick bit of metal raound it any how). tyres are 235/85 MT, but there Kumho and the rears are gettin a bit smooth, so could be part of it! but I've sticking 265/75 BFG MT's on it next month too :D

2) moveable solonoid pack, sound, cheers...not sure where under the bonnet tho as my 2.8 Isuzu lump takes up quite a lot of room to be fair:rolleyes:... but it goes like hell!
I take it then "the bridge" is the solonoid?

3) I was going to get a winch bumper for it too! (lot of money is going to be spent in the next month) by chassis mounts? as in where the bumper mounts to the chassis?

A warn? tidy cheers

not a tourer! eww ;) lets not get started on bikes again. yawn. i did actually forget to mention in my post (cos i got carried away) that for £30-£50 off ebay. buy a tirfor as backup to a leccy winch.

there are loads of downsides to winches too! if its front mounted. the only way your going to get out is forward! or at an angle forward. tirfors are good for hauling you out of hedges when you slide down off camber sections. a winch here would be useless as you would just pull yourself along the bottom of the slope! but hopefully you will be a good enough driver to not get into that situation.

if your running 265BF MTs then IF you do get stuck, your in trouble regardless! maybe 9.500lb wont do it... i dunno, im not experienced enough to say. even with a double line pull you might struggle if your upto the grill in ****.
