Can someone please talk me out of this, if it is a bad idea...

I have standard steel wheels on my Defender with 235/85/16's.

The wheels are the standard off white colour, but look a tad tatty (i.e.odd bits of rust specks)

Now, I can either refurb the steels (rub them down and paint) or buy some Boost Alloys...but I dunno which way to go...

Pro's for Alloys:

Makes it look a tad newer
Don't need to run inner tubes (these keep popping)

Cons for Alloys:

Looks chav/blingy?
Worried of denting them while Green Laning (but I prob only do this a few times a year)

Pro's for keeping Steels:

No worries if they get dented
Look good in certain circumstances
No worries if they get knicked

Cons for keeping Steels:

I will keep getting punctures
Sometimes they look a bit "povety" spec
Got to keep them white.

Arghhh I don't know...are Boosts worth it? Or should I just smarten my Steels up?

Help

wtf you want alloys for you aint driving a sports car! Smarten up yer steels....if you smarten up the inside as well theres no reason to get punctures....

Haha...knew I'd get that reaction...I was hoping you were all going to say that.

With regards to trying to sort out the inside of the steel wheel, I have done this (I also swapped them for TD5 rims) but to no avail. We have concluded that it is the inner tube rubbing on the inside of the tyre.

Blue Beasty, I was thinking of colour coding them, but they currently contrast well with the roof.

Now, is Halfords Paint upto the mark? Or should I source elsewhere?

Thanks lads!

one thing to watch for with tubes is they have different size rubber around the valves.....you need a 'fat' type for Landy rims. I have a series of punctures until I started getting proper anal about cleaning the inside of the tyre before fitting.....even a small piece of grit will work is way through the tube after a while.
Used synthetic enamel on mine.....tis good stuff

I managed to pick up a second hand set of 5 Defender wheels off eBay that were in good nick with decent ish tyres for £70 ish, hammerited black they look alright, and now if I really want to I could put some insane knobbly ones on the old wheels for off road purposes...If that's any help at all!

Fair enough...did you spray or brush it on?

Is it quite hard wearing then?

I'm looking into what shade to go for...

Tig Up...thanks for the offer, but it looks like I'm sticking with the Steels now, unless they are ridiculously cheap!

Got 5 steelies here if u want um. Off me 110, don't know if they would fit? £50 n there yours to sort out as u see fit.

Thainy, I'm ok with regards to the wheels...have 10 now haha...just need smartening up a touch. Thanks anyway.

Think I've got the paint sorted as well. Should save me a few quid anyways.

Looks like you've made your mind up now. I bought a set of scruffy modulars off fleabay for £50. Rubbed them down with wet'n'dry then sprayed them with Halfrauds wheel paint. They look as good as new - especially as they meant I could fit some decent sized rubber at last.

I vote for big modulars!

I got these off of ebay for £200 wheels and tyres, brand new with stickers on!

Fella bought them for a project but his wife gave him so much grief she made hime get rid of it all!

I did clean and paint my old white steel rims for a while but much prefer these.
