I've just put a disco 200tdi in my 87 defender with the LT77 box, I've rigged up a snorkel, and made everything water tight (i think anyway) But I want to do the same with the axles and gear/trasfer box.

The wading kit I am getting cosists of all the connections, plus piping, and main consol I need that goes into the inside of the engine bay with the end connector going up high somewhere. Anyway, the axles breather connections are obvious, but can anyone tell me where to look for the gearbox, and transmission breathers? Also do all 200tdi's have a plate somewhere near the timing cover that also needs a breather connector going to it?

Some people say you need to buy this round plate thing with and end on it to connect the breather connector too, that also goes to the main breather consol on the engine bay? But I cant see such a plate on my engine, unless I'm looking in the wrong place? I may as well do it all properly, I dont want water getting in anywhere!

Also I have the disco air filter unit, I have sealed the 'donkey dick' thing, and side arm, But how do I seal the part where the screw in air filter goes without restricting future accress to it? anyone have any bright ideas on that one? Sure it would be easy to whack a load of sealer over where it screws in to the casing, but what if I want to check/clean the air filter later?

Any Help on this much appriciated.:)

Large thin o ring stretched around the air filter case then lid tightened against it.
Remove seat base, then the plate underneath and you can see both t/box and gearbox breather pipework.
Timing chest breather, not really sure this is needed, but as you look in the engine bay its the little round disc 3 inches across , below where the air con pump would go.

The breathers for the gear and trans box breathers can be easily found if you remove the middle seat and look down onto the top of the box. Mine had the old banjo breathers in place, you have to look far forward for the gearbox one but the transfer box is right below the middle seat. The round plate that fits on the crank case can be seen if you look at the front of the engine between the engine and the cooling fan, on the drivers side.

Ah right! Thanks guys! Why do they always put things in awkward places where you cant see them without taking stuff apart! :5bcuss:

Cause you would not have a body if they had every thing easy to get too lol. How often do you think your going to be going there to need easy access???

does anyone have any pics of where they have fitted the breathers? im a picture person like to look n make sure its being done right as we are going to fit a wading kit too so want to make sure it's done correctly, also I have been advised to silicon the bottom of the airbox is this needed?

cheers

when i've found, and done mine which im planning to do in the next couple of days, as my kits just arrived, I'll take some pics of where they are and post em up for you. Not sure about your airbox though, As I have a metal cylinder as my airfilter. I'm sure someone will tell you though. :)

The bit on the air box you need to seal up is the dust dump valve, bear in mind on 200 models there is also one inside the wing behind where the wing vent is.
The lid on the metal air box needs sealing and this is what you use the large thin o ring for that i mentioned above.

Cheers landie man n Lynall, I do have a snorkel fitted to mine will I still need t look for the wing one?

Cheers

I haven't got any wing vents on my landy. (It's an old 87 90) so had to do some adaptions. Basically I cut the bottom bit off where it goes to the side vent, and drilled a large hole on top of the wing, and put it through the top of the wing! It sounds a botch, But it looks good I think, (i'll put a pic up when I get time) and does the same job! just sealed everything around the hole I cut. looks really neat.

Made sure I measured everything very carefully though! lol

Yes but you can see it from under the bonnet or under the wing!
You have to remove the plastic wing spat from the main inner wing with all the little clips, buy some new ones ten should do plus some good old ones, they are pennies.
Item number 5 is the kiddy, you remove the grill and fit the snorkel but all the under bonnet pipework is std defender incl the rubber dump valve

If I'd of had that on mine it would of been sooo much easier! But I didnt have the side vent and inner conector, thats why I cut that bit off the bottom of the snorker, cut a hole the size of the rubber flex pipe on the snorkel on top of the wing, put it through there, and connected it to a suitable sized concertina pipe I bought off ebay. Then put some tape around where the wing top entry point now is, smeared some sealer on to make it look neat, then removed the tape so I have a nice clean edge all the way around. It looks like it should be there, so I'm pleased with the results!

Just put this up incase there are others with older or converted landys that dont have the side vent who want to fit a snorkel. If your a little bit brave, and capable, it can be done!

Same solution, just another way of doing it if you dont have the side vent that 99% of snorkels connect too. :)

Bonnets off at moment so will look but my snorkel comes out of the wing as it's already fitted in there (or will be when it goes back together) got loads of spat clips cos rear ones are off for spraying body work but front are still fitted will have a look next weekend at it, got an Audi to fix now at moment after a slight mishap!!

Mates 1987 90 didnt have the wing vents so we just cut out the hole and fitted the snorkel, easy enough if slightly worrying at the time!
