Think my coupling is fooked. It does turn by hand when the engine is cold but does not spin freely. Isn't that the test?

But then shouldn't the engine be overcooling instead of going slightly above half-way (well above in heavy traffic when its 38C outside and AC is on full blast) and scarin' poor 'lil me?

edit: When it does get really hot I notice after its cooled down that I have to add a bit of coolant. Literally just a teacup's worth so not much. Am I right in not suspecting a leak and that this much loss is "within tolerance" so to speak?

No it should not spin freely when cold. When hot with the engine running, stick a rolled up newspaper into the blades (mind your hands!). If it stops it's fooked. If you are loosing water check for damp carpets in the right hand side footwell, it should not use water, you either have leak or something more serious.

Good idea about the newspaper! Carpets are bone dry. The water loss is quite small but I take your point (with trepidation!).

Thing is I had a good look around and can't see any obvious leaks or even drip marks and coolant residue. I had the whole cooling system serviced last month, replaced a couple of hoses, washed out at least 4 kg of dust and bugs and leaves from the radiator and ac condensor cooling vanes, that sort of thing so I'm inclined to think the cooling circuit is ok. Which leaves me with your "something more serious". Is it check all the spark plugs and look for the one that's shiny and clean? Oh dear.

Fett, I will buy a coupling I think. P38spares seems to have one at a good price so going to get a mate to buy it and bring with when he comes in a week. Just going to try Data's rolled newspaper trick first.

Good news, VC is fine. Fan 1 : Rolled Newspaper 0. I found the problem too, the ac fans aren't kicking in. This I can handle. Thanks for the support fellas!

fett, shut up already and find me a LHD classic. one that actually runs unlike yourn, ok? :D :D

p.s. as far as i know all ac fans come on when you switch on the ac. they're not thermostatically controlled.

like mine? you dont want that pml :p

nah its been good barring a couple of minor fookups lol

thats the trouble with these foreign countries driving on the wrong side of the road!

what you doing out in dhaka anyway mate?

I spend half my time here where I own a business and half in Berlin where I've two lovely ladies, one of whom is 6 months old. Shuttlin back and forth's a bit of a drag (and expensive) but can't complain as so far I seem to be holding things together! My P38 is here. In Germany mum-in-law always lends me her BMW E30 convertible which is absolutely mint and quite a treat to drive but really I need ta have me own wheels.

I have had 3 e30 325i's one was mint southafrican import with sump guard , mint leather and aircon it only had 38k on it at 13 years old and fsh. Had one with a shrick cam in it too, that was quick. not as quick as the 540 I have now though lol.

whats dhaka like then? , I have only seen it on snips form the paris dhaka.

I am surprised a p38 can survive in the third world, correct me if I am wrong about the third bit.

not the third bit - you're wrong about the paris dhaka bit. you're thinking of dakar! :D

its not too bad actually. there's lots of traffic and the roads are bad which is precisely why i love being in my P38. I've only about 70,000 miles on it, put less than 5000 on in a year so the car is in pretty good shape. the main problem is that good mechanics are hard to find. i mean they have talent but not much access to training so they're about as good as me! on the other hand even at the main dealer's i've made friends such that i'm allowed on to the shop floor and i can poke around and yak with the mechs as they're working. Getting hold of parts was an absolute nightmare when I first got the car because every things cost 500% more. So I decided to import parts commercially myself, really just to feed my own habit but also to help out the handful of other landy owners out here. Its more a sideline than a business but its fun.

Bangladesh, in Asia. The little speck at the top of the Bay of Bengal, east of India. Now be a good lad and (mapsdot)google it. Incidentally you should travel out here if you ever can. Its a real eye-opener to experience raw humanity in this way. Me mate who would have brought me the VC is coming to spend a month here for that reason and also to look at business prospects. "Asia, the continent of the future" and all that, don't you know!

ah I see, bangla bangers lol.

Asia is to unstable with pakistan and afganistan where and what they are, plus bangladesh will be under water soon, not a good thing with a p38 lol

you'd be surprised. i'm quite fond of my rangie for a reason, she's gotten me out of a couple of tight spots and a few deep puddles. at one stage i would ford a little river twice a day going to and from work (there were roads but i just used a short cut). real life driving conditions here are somewhat different to the genteel english countryside and she's never failed me. the only time something goes wrong is right after i fix something completely unrelated! lol.

ps. wos bangla bangers? is that that chop shop show? cringe! that fella's a numpty. he can't tell his arse from his elbow and he got picked to go on telly. still, must feed the common perceptions i suppose.

They are controlled by gas pressure which relates to temperature on the P38. On the V8 excess engine temperature will also bring them on I believe.

Data do you mean refrigerant gas pressure? Could you expand on that please and also on how the engine temperature will start the fans?
