P38A viscous fan temp

Hi all
Does anyone know what temperature the coupling should engage at? Was stuck in traffic today and the engine got up to 98c.
I pulled into a carpark and the fan was easy to turn with one finger, if have thought at that temp it should be very stiff and roar as the revs pick up.

Where was the needle? Does it roar on startup?

Don’t forget, it works on air temperature, not water temperature.

There's an app called Strobily on the Play store that might work as a photo tachometer.

Thanks everyone.
I'd forgotten that most basic test, does it roar on startup, pretty sure it doesn't.
Yes, i stress about it constantly!! Needle stays in the middle, but that doesn't move until it's too late anyways, so a bit pointless.
It's a petrol, I'll check it out today and see how it sounds on starting, then measure how hot the coupling gets as per the pdf

You could add my viscous fan mod to give a degree of extra security.

I plan to, but there's a wiring problem somewhere I've not got to the bottom of, fans don't come on

Just read the pdf, whatever happened to the get it hot, try stopping the fan with a rolled up newspaper, if you get confetti it fine if it stops its fecked.

Well its paper and can be roller up the news part as Trump would say is fake or a joke

The brother in law buys it but he's an Evertonian so what do you expect,still takes him all day to do the 10minute crossword.

On mine, there was a break in the wire from the tri state switch to the relay in the under bonnet fuse box, I never did find the break, I just put a new wire in.
