VIN number and Chassis number; same?

On a Series 3 1980. Would the VIN number and Chassis number be the same?
I.E the last digits.
The "glencoyne" web site is showing pictures of VIN plates and calling them Chassis numbers, is this correct?
I ask this beacuse my S3 does not have a chassis number stamped on it. It's not been removed it just not there.

From memory, early Series just had a production number stamped on the metal plate inside the cab. I don't think VIN numbers were around at that time, manufacturers just did what they wanted.
Later on, chassis numbers started being stamped on the front chassis dumb iron.

But they may be so rusty now they are almost impossible to read, or even find, or coated with underseal or other gook, likewise.

And many vehicles have had front dumb irons replaced, so there may be none at all, except on the plate inside the cab.
 
My Series 3 had the chassis number stamped on the chassis and the exact same number engraved into the vehicle ID plate at the radiator

The 59 S2 i'm working on has chassis number stamped on to dumbiron and on plate inside bulkhead..

Fair enough. I am only going by what I remember seeing over the years.

Most Series I see now are re-chassis, some have no numbers, on some, the owner has stamped the new chassis themselves with the old number.

Edit. Also from memory, Series are quite different in small details even within vehicles built in the same year.

I always get the impression that what happened on the day was in part down to what parts were in stock, and what the chap who was doing different jobs on that day felt like.

If they were in a hurry to get home on a Friday, they may not have bothered to stamp the chassis! :D
 
Vin and chassis one and the same thing, unless it has some weird history.

My 59 still has its original chassis number, when the dumb iron rotted out, I rebuilt it so I could keep the chassis number in its rightful place.
 
I am one of the folk who kept the original stamped dumb iron and stamped the original number back onto the new chassis dumbiron

Yes, they are the same.

Is your VIN on the plate one of those nine figure numbers starting with 9 and ending in a letter, presumably 'C'? I'm not sure how the numbers were applied when Land Rover changed the layout of all the VINs but I would have thought both the plate and the chassis would still be the same, that's the point of a VIN.

OK so that's one of the amended style VINs, I wasn't sure whether or not they came in as early as 1980. I haven't got any experience of those but I would assume that the VIN stamped on the chassis should be the same. That is the case on 'normal' cars, certainly all the ones I've had as far as I know, although I never took much notice.
