Hi

Sorry to say it but no It does'nt sound well at all (sorry) It sounds rather like the hydraulic tappets have forgot the meaning of Hydraulic (Tappets are no good)

I have the very same problem with my 89 EFi after an oil change (The oil came out thick I'm thinking a heavy grade oil was put to keep the tappets quiet) Now half of the engine is in the Kitchen.

It's not a hard job to change them, just time consuming (Provided you know a little and have a Torque Wrench, Allen Key, 13mm Socket, 10,11,12,14 mm Socket & Spanner)

The Tappets are located under the Plenum Chamber, Trumpets, Inlet Manifold, at the end of the push rods. (((( Not in the Rocker boxes as I got told )))

I assume the second set of clunks are the seatbelts ? If not you have major problems ((Nothing which can't be resolved))

I Hope this helps and doesn't scare you

PS if you can do it yourself it will be loads cheaper (Specialist quoted me £400, LR quoted £800+Vat)

Odd - there seems to be no noise coming from the engine at all, more like the exhaust manifold UNDER the car. Lol, that very loud clunk was the door shutting.

That said though, I put some more oil in today (registered zero with dipstick) but then this new noise starts! Ugh, off to the mechanic

Hi

If it's tappets it will sound like it's coming from the Exhaust manifolds because the tappets are behind the exhaust manifolds (if you imagine the V dimantled)

No oil will explain the tappets being dry which is causing the rattle. I would be fairly confident that it's tappets related less your push rods are bent.

I'll oil it up well before sending it to the mechanic on Sat. Looking to rebuild the engine anyway, just want a second opinion! You were saying yours had the same problem?

What age are you, Charlotte?

Mine had exactly the same problem started to rattle changed the tappets now everything is quiet.

Oh I did rebuild my top half of the engine which isn't hard just annoying on the lack of space for the rear bolts to the inlet manifold clamps and the throttle springs.

I'm 30.

Cost/parts/where did you get them?
I paid only £1900 for the car, or a little less, so it's worth spending a bit on restoring it to its former glory. Apparently you can just leave the tappets, but I'm going to go mad with the noise.
My parents have set me a budget of €6k (about €4800), so I am well within it and can drop a bit on reconditioning the engine. Just de-rusted the drivers footwell..some minor rust to be expected on older models.

I only paid £900 for mine but I'm very picky so have had it to bits several times

Parts you will need:

Loads of Releasing spray £1 per can from Poundland
Rocker box gaskets £5 JSF norwich
Tappets from RimmerBros £50 ish
Inlet manifold Gasket Rimmerbros £8.00 ish
Inlet Gasket Glamps JSF Norwich £15
Tube of Hylomar £3
Cold Start injector gasket RimmerBros ? no idea haven't checked bill
Assorted pipes £5.00 (I'm not gentle getting them off and very picky)

Plus it's not a hard job just time consuming and with a few tools you can do it yourself.

Torque Wrench
Spanners
Sockets
Rachet
Phillips and Flat Screw drivers
Pair of long nose tongs.
4 hrs of time

If you give it a bash yourself you have to make sure you note where all the bolts come from and where the assorted plugs come from, also do not damage the trumpets under the plenum chamber.

It will be heaps cheaper (few hundred pounds) to do it youre self. I am re doing mine because I broke a push rod.

Lol I will see how much my mech will charge (family friend, so he usually charges parts only) and consider from there. I'm 16. Crazy, eh?
