I have a 1994 300 Tdi that I have recently put a new front prop shaft on because I had a severe vibration coming from under the car. The shaft has a slight telescopic action on it to allow for the movement of the axle. In my case this telescopic action had completely seized and with there being no give in the shaft it just about shook the car to bits.

Unfortunately I had already gone down the route of replacing my UJ's thinking this may correct the situation, but it didn't solve the problem, replacing the shaft completely did.

I think some 300tdi's had a rubber doughnut in the rear prop which could perish and fall apart causing nasty vibes, worth a look?

regards

Dave

Thanks for the help. Changed ujs today. Checked prop to make sure it wasnt seized. The vibration has got worse! Is there a spring inside the handbrake handle? The button on mine is stuck inside. you can poke it out but as soon as you push it in again it stays in. Started happening today when i was test driving at changing ujs.

Thought I'd mention a problem I had some 20 years ago that I had on a 110. It also caused vibration and it wasn't until you mentioned the handbrake that it came back to me. It turned out that my handbrake was binding and it was most evident when I dipped the clutch. I had the handbrake serviced and hey presto it did the job. Before it was seen to though the vibration was terrible and the hotter the brake got the worse the vibration was. If I remember rightly the underlying problem was the gunged up linkages on the handbrake mechanism that weren't allowing the brake to release properly.. Hope this helps.
