Vibration through steering wheel...

Hi All,

I am getting a vibration/juddering on my P38 through the steering wheel, not too bad at lower speeds just a slight vibration, once i hit about 70+ it is shaking the passenger seat......I have recently had all the wheels balanced, so not a problem there.. the steering is pulling 'every so slightly' to the left, will this cause the vibration? I am going to get the tracking done anyway......

A lot of balancing places are not up to scratch, maybe just a bad balancing job. Take it somewhere else and get it done again. Otherwise see the threads about out of round tyres, swap the wheels front to back.
 
Hoarec - i think you may be driving my car.

Seriously though, i have exactly the same issue. had the wheels balanced, alignment done, new radius arm bushes & drop link arms & bits and pieces. Still happening, fitted new steering damper (gas filled bilstein unit) still happening.

Guy behind the desk in the mechanics suggested because the tyres are down to near the legal limit that it could be causing it. I am not sure i believe him, but I'll need tyres over the next few weeks, so i'll let you know!

Hope you have more luck than me - my solution is that I have just learned to live with it!
 
I had the same problem and changed the swivel joints and drag link both can cause this hope this helps - the drag link was about 30 quid i think for the whole assembly and a local garage did the swivels for 2oo quid a side so not bad
 
find a proper 4x4 tyre place and get them to balance them,i had mine balanced at a local tyre place and kwik fit,still didn,t cure it, i then went to 4x4 accesories and tyres near to me,when they balanced them they found they had to remove the tyre and turn it 90 deg and refit it to get them balanced %100 and then bingo no more steering vibration problems,and only cost £30

It's worth checking that you've actually got Spiggot rings fitted if you need them (ie non P38 wheels).

I had new tyres fitted to mine and they left one of the rings off - horrible vibration at 60 - 70.

Ok showing my ignorance now....What are Spiggot Rings? As fo the wheels, I have 20" Alloys on mine with pirelli scorpions zero's on........

What is a spigot / centric ring / o'ring?

It's a ring that is fitted to the centre of your hub of a vehicle to decrease a bore size, normally used when aftermarket alloy wheels are fitted, or wheels are transferred from one make to another.

E.g. - Lexus wheels on a Honda, Toyota Wheels on a Nissan, and so on.

Spigots also aid the process of putting your wheel on centrally every time you take it off, so that you dont scrape the alloy with the thread from the hub.

What are spigot rings made of?

Spigot rings are normally produced using the Highest standard of Poly Carbon (Plastic). Spigot rings are also made in aluminium, but are not commonly sold.

Do I need a spigot ring for mine?

If your wheel does not sit perfectly in line with your hub and balance perfectly with no wobbling, then you may need to check that you have a spigot ring there. Many people who experience vibration from their wheels at over 60mph will most likely need a spigot ring, as this ensures that the wheel fits perfectly central on the hub. If this is you, then yes, you should try checking your tracking and maybe then consider spigot rings.

Spiggott rings are adaptors that fit onto the hubs to allow the use of non p38 wheels. They are required for wheels that have a different hub size to the P38 as the wheels need to be supported on the hubs and not the studs and if the holes in the wheel are too large then they won't be equally supported and will tend to move as they rotate causing vibration (amongst other things).

20 inch rims weren't standard on the P38 so this is worth checking.

Do a forum search for spiggott rings (try variations on the spelling) - there have been quite a few threads on this subject (including dimensions to check).

Can someone please tell me what type of wheels are on my P38.... they are 20" and I want to know if I need to fit spigot rings. The picture is on my profile page....

Tricky one that. Do you know what they came from? It looks like you've been able to use the P38 nuts which is unusual for a non standard wheel...

Not knowing much I assumed they were from another land rover/rangerover.....I only bought the car a couple of weeks ago.....
 
Well they look like they might be from a Disco 3. Perhaps someone can confirm?

I'm not sure of the hub dimensions, but pretty sure all the later wheels needed spiggott rings to fit the P38 properly. Have a look on ebay - there are plenty on there and they're quite cheap, although it would be worth checking whether you've actually got any fitted first - they might be stuck in the wheels or on the hubs. Took me a while to work out what I was looking at with mine.

Thanks Guy, As you may have seen from my other thread, I made a mistake....thye are 19", don't know why I was thinking of 20"......Anyway, seems like a job for the weekend to get the wheels off and have a look.......

I have speed related ' seat shake' and a general shuddering through vehicle...was present when fitted with 20" Stormers/spigot rings and still present with balanced 18" Hurricanes fitted /no spigot rings. Any ideas as to cause?
