Vibrating steering wheel, is it a wheel balance problem?

Since fitting sawtooth alloys and BFG 265/75/16 tyres my steering shakes (rotates by about 1-2 degresse up and down) a lot and its incredibly irritating.
I had them balanced and again re-balanced. Now the steering is much better, 'only' shaking between 60-90kmh. Between 90-115km its ok and then shakes again 115-140kmh (top speed). The second person which re-balanced them said they were very badly balanced the first time...so I am guessing they aren't quite perfect even after the second time. There are a lot of weights on the inside wheel surface.

Is this still likely to be a wheel balance issue? Or should I fit a new steering damper to help?

Had mine knobblies balanced and still they vibrated at about 60 mph...only when I decided on a new set of road tread tyres and hey presto, no more steering wheel shaking.

It may be worth checking the swivel pre load to help some but if it was ok on previous wheels tyres then it may be a problem with your sawtooth alloys. Have them checked for balance without tyres.

Have you tried swapping fronts to back? to see if it is only one wheel that is out of balance?
I assume you have checked you do not have any mud inside the wheel itself.

Cheers

Hi guys,
I've checked for mud and they are clean, just had them re balanced again and they are a lot better. I may get road biased tyres eventually. The BFGs look great, but they have certain setbacks

Are the bfg's muds or ats? I have 265/7516 bfg at and am on my second set of them and have never had a problem. It could well just be the balancing that is the problem, they are large heavy tyres and will require a lot of weight. With alloys you cannot add weight to both sides of the rim as you can with steels, as they are stuck on the inside rather than cliped to the edge. This makes getting a perfect balance more difficult when large amounts of weight are needed.

I would definitely give Neilly's advice a go, you may find that it reduces it to an acceptable level or by swapping them about it is only one wheel which needs to be re balanced rather than the set.
