Very Strange Landrover Discovery Mark III problem

Hope someone can help.

We are having some very annoying intermittant problems with our Land
Rover Discovery's handbrake sticking on. Strangely, when this occurs
the Discovery will either struggle to start or not start at all.

The battery and alternator have been checked and the handbrake cable
has been replaced.

We have a strange feeling that these incidents are not a coincidence,
but are connected in some way, but we can not conceive how.

Can anyone advise if this is possible?

iffy engine earth, earthing through the handbrake cable, or something?

Try the earths as if they are not good enough it uses the handbrake cable as
one

I suppose a bad earth connection could lead to current passing through
the handbrake cable, but I'm not sure that the handbrake actually
connects any significant parts of the vehicle. The classic example of
such is a speedo-cable failure. I'd certainly have a close look at the
earth connections to the engine.

It certianly is! I'd bet a cup of tea that there is a bad earth from
the battery to chassis, so it is earthing through the next best
option - namely the handbrake cable, which seems to "do in" the
lubrication of the hand brake actuator causing the pistons to stick
and to fail to release properly. It's not unknown for the hand brake
cable to melt under these circumstances.

If a Discovery Mark III, send it back - it's only a few days old.

Seriously, may be a bad earth to the battery causing the battery to
earth through the handbrake cable, heating the cable up and causing it
to stick. Run a heavy cable from battery to a good earth on the
chassis to test.

If this is the problem, and it could be, I would expect it to be
engine/chassis earth, not battery/chassis.

Thank you all for the advice, there were no signs of any burning and nothing
looked obvious. Yesterday my huband cleaned all the connections and replaced
the earth leads.

So far so good! He hasn't replaced the handbrake cable again yet, just to be
on the safe side. We will give it a week to ensure the problem doesn't
reoccur and hopefully all will be ok.
