Vegetable oil in disco?

Hi all, heard on the grape vine that you can run a TD5 on 50/50 vegetable oil like what you get from a chip shop and diesel. Does anyone know if this is actually True and if you need a special filter, mods or anything? I heard it seriously reduced your fuel bills!
