veg oil

Can someone tell me straight first is it ok to run my disco 300tdi on a mix of veg oil and diesel if so which oil is best and secondly is it legal i know there is a new law which states you can use 2500 ltrs or something like that before you pay duty so does that mean i can literally go and buy new oil and use it in the disco and as long as i dont use anymore than 2500ltrs in a year iam exempt from any duty?
I just dont want to be stopped and then fined for using the stuff so thought you guys would no

I thought the 2500 limit only applied to waste veg oil ?

IIRC you still have to register as a fuel producer with HMRC to claim the 2500 litres.

Just paid 2.52 for 3l bottles from the big M round here. 80-some pence a litre is a much better option than the 108 at the pumps.

Asda are doing 2x3l of veg oil for £5. 83p a litre too.

As I understand it, so many small producers registering was costing more in administration than they were getting back in tax so it was cheaper for them to say first 2500l tax free to discourage people using small amounts for personal use wasting their time with paperwork. On top of that anyone driving on veg based fuel is contributing to the government targets of reducing co2 and moving away from a depenancy on fossil fuels. Also with so many people expermenting with alternative fuels somone might come up with some really good invention which could revolutionise modern personal transportation.

However as far as brand new veg oil goes (and I could be wrong here but this is my current understanding) you do have to register and pay duty (at a reduced rate) for new veg oil used as road fuel.

As for the technical side of it, the 200 and 300tdi engines are pretty much bullet proof. The MOD use them for that reason; fuel purchased in thrid world countries is not of the same quality as the stuff here and has often been watered down and such so they need an engine tough enough to cope which the LR diesels seem to.

A 50/50 mix should do just fine in most landys though with winter coming you might want to increase the ratio to 60 or 75% diesel. Experiment and you cant go too far wrong. If you want to go 100% oil you'll need to do a twin tank conversion - starting up on diesel to get the engine warm and then use the heat of the engine to thin the oil down to the same viscosity as cold diesel. Before stopping you flush diesel back through to stop oil gumming things up and to make for easy starting the next time. Although possible to run on 100% with no mods the general opinion is that it will cause long term damage to direct injection engines. Running veg in a TD5 may be more difficult. Common rails generally dont like veg oil at all so a twin tank system would be a bare minimum and you'd probably have to do other changes as well like adding a second fuel pump etc.

Out of interest does anyone know if the new Disco 3 TDV6 engines run ok on veg or not? Are these engines common rail ?

You are exempt from paying duty on any "fuel substitute" up to the limit of 2500 litre /annum.
You do not have to register if you use below this amount.
Both new veg oil and waste veg oil are deemed to be "fuel substitutes" by HMRC as indeed are a number of other products on which you can run a diesel engine.
Interesting point, how do HMRC know you use below 2500 litre/annum?

Mine runs on anything from 60/40 WVO to dino through to 100% dino. no problems but I do fill her up with 100% dino to flush any crud out, I know the WVO will do this but I like the idea of the FFA's being swilled away as well.

veg oil normally is rape seed.

FYI tesco 3 litre veg oil is now on offer...buy 2 for 5 quid....works out 83 ppl

with the bulk drums you've got to watch out for any "anti foaming agents" as these can bugger up your injectors/pump.

They won't hurt your injectors or pump. What they will do is leave abrasive deposits in your engine which will wear out your valves, bores etc in double quick time. Apparently.
