Im gonna try unleaded on my next fill.

Did 30 litres WVO (free!) to 15 litres derv last night, shes a little lumpy but for over 1/2 tank for £20 i can live with it :D :D

had a read through this thread, am tempted to try it with my 200tdi.. as a newbie, can i just put 70% veg oil and 30%diesel straight into tank without any mods and ofcourse any problems?

is sunflower oil ok to use? i can get plenty from chinese, just needs cleaned

I use any type of liquid oil. Watch out for stuff like "Prep Maxi". its heavy on palm oil and is solid at room temp.

Carry a spare fuel filter, and do regular oil changes.

I do :)

being a tight scotman, i must give this a try. migth try some new oil first then clean the sunflower oil from chinese if the 200tdi is still going lol

cheers and sorry for the thread hijack.. one more question, i read theres more risk to damaging pump using sunflower oil, this correct??

bets oil to use?

1. veg oil
2.
3.?

edit:

what do you use to filter the used oil before adding it?

I used a coffee filter in a funnel to filter my own WVO but it too 4 days to filter about 4.5 litres so I have been running on new veg oil seen as tesco's had a 80p a litre deal on it was worth it and I have run from about 30% oil to about 70% oil and have noticed lumpy idle just lately on the higher % oil so I may try the unleaded route to settle this down but had no problems with power or consumption. did have 2 guys on push bikes ride past me in traffic and ask if it was running on oil as I was making them hungry lol

I have my method, but its a closely guarded secret!

There's plenty of how-to guides on the internet. A bit of research will tell you how its done.

I want to build a Mighty White, thats my next project :)

can you run it through the filter then add it straight to tank, or did you have to leave it a while, why it took 4 days?

4 days? It takes 3 weeks if you dont want to ruin your engine or spend a fortune on filters.

I can do around 300 litres in 3 weeks. However, my actual time spent working on that amount is around an hour, the rest of the time its left to its own devices.

i use 1 micron filters in a canister u can get them on e-bay .use gravity , container on top of bench with pipe from bottom leading to filter then on to container on floor . i use a 10 micron bag filter on top of the top container to catch any 'bits' that will be in old oil. takes about a day to do 15L . I never go more than 3 gal to £25 diesel .run ok but in winter can be a bit sluggish when cold.done this for 7 years no problems but u do need to change fuel filter a little more often. 300TDI disco auto

Sorry to butt in - very interesting thread, and sorry if I am being daft.

If I buy on the cheap some brand new (unused) vegetable oil of a decent standard and pour it into my Disco 200tdi engine (in a Defender of course) and don't go over 50% veg oil by volume (mixed with derv) will that run without an issue? I often can get hold of a few litres of decent veg oil and wouldn't like to let it go to waste by actually using it for something sensible like cooking.
