Bit of a long shot,

I bought a set of 3 gauges off Ebay which were from an Audi Coupe (96) as they were cheaper than buying individual gauges and senders.

My plan is to pull them out of the original Audi Binnacle and use the Oil temp and Oil pressure and sell the Voltmeter on. Now the wiring harnesses are all neat and tidy and i would rather install it as it is, But.

I dont know what half the wiring does! I can see which ones are for the bulbs  worked out the sender from the oil temp, but there is a relay and a fistfull of wires, for what i assume to be oil pressure (the volts only has 2 wires).

Can anyone shed some light on this. done this before?

I will probably start another thread regarding fitting/wiring/senders etc. The only other thing i need to know right now is can I splice my Ignition live from where the original gauges take it? and also the backlight live feed? or will 3 additional gauges be too much for the original wiring? wouldnt have thought they draw much.

cheers all

Ok Im finding a bit of Info now.

Does anybody know what a slave dimmer unit is? Apparently what i thought was a relay is infact one of those. Dont know what it is or how to connect it. nevermind.

Found it on a VW forum: Old Audi/Golf gauges quite a good way of getting all three cheap. I think they're a bit nicer to look at than the modern VDOs. If you're fleabaying, worth asking whoever's selling to take off the oil pressure sender as well. As above, they'll work well with the modern VDO senders.

If you get the gauges + loom, get the added bonus of the slave dimmer unit for the instrument lights (small plastic box that looks like a relay, but isn't).

Interesting.

take what off? the dimmer unit? probably, but i would like to keep it if it does what i think it does. I seem to have been sent the full loom and have narrowed it down a bit now. Off 1 bit i have the 2 wires for the temp and pressure sender, then I have another bit with a bulb (presume pressure warning light) along with 3 other wires (unknown). Then there is another bit with more wires on which has the main feed, earth, bulb side feed and about 2-3 others. Im hoping these wires were for other things (like warning bulbs) and i can just tape them off.

2 more questions: on the gauge I have a G, + and a T. now, G is the wire to the senders + I assume is positive but the T one has brown wires off it. Is the brown pos or neg in OEM applications? Not far off it now :)

G
