Hi all finally got round to purchasing a re-con VCU (had been running in 2wd for last 2 months). I fitted the new unit on Sat and took it for a drive but was getting tyre scrubbing on tight lock. done the 1 wheel up test and was getting 80+ secs for a 45deg movement using a 1mt bar and 5kg weight. panicking I took the unit back off and carried out a bench test using the same length bar and weight as in bell's youtube video and was getting 42 secs (the video was showing 16 secs). I contacted the seller via a message yesterday and they are saying that they re-con the VCUs in accordance with landrover specs and I don't know what I'm talking about (they could be right about that). Have since mailed them again and am awaiting a reply.
What to do??. From what I can tell they are a well respected company and have been mentioned on this site a few times with no negative comments.

Bugger all, its just that they had 1 in stock and the postage to over here was reasonable.
Still awaiting a reply from them

I looked at a few other places when I was looking to replace my VCU but after reading every thing on this site and a few others the general consensus seemed to show Bells were very reliable for recon VCU's. As I don't do many miles in the Freelander I contacted Ken at Bell's and asked him to contact me when I got to the top of the list.I have to admit after changing the VCU its like a new car, it accelerates like it used to do when I first got it years ago and reversing with it is a dream now. Bells(Ken's) customer service is second to non and well worth the wait for our name to hit the top of the list. As for what you are experiencing I would assume there's something wrong with it

They have been in contact again and are offering either another replacement unit or a refund so its not as bad as I thought it may be.
Will let you know how I get on

Good on you, sounds like you didn't take any flack from them and they can't be all that bad if they're making those offers. You would have hoped that they would have tested it before sending it out though. If you take the replacement route, will be interesting to see if it was a 1-off fault or they don't know what they're doing!
