Ok so I've just bought myself a freelander td4 sport only to realise its in need of a new vcu, this isn't really a problem as I'm pretty sure I can do this on my own.
However she is also making a noise that is always the same no matter what speed I'm traveling. Could this be vcu related or could it be the transfer box?
Any info would be much appreciated thanks.

It was a rubbing noise, I've removed the vcu and prop shafts earlier to find that they have already been replaced fairly recently not even rusty bolts on it! However the prop shaft bearings are shot (I think when it was fitted they ran out of grease or couldn't be bothered to put any on!) and when I manually turned them one of them was making a "rubbing" noise so hopefully this will be a lucky escape for me. And mean a change of mechanic who recommended I replace both the vcu and transfer box :/
