valve stem seals- time

Hi,

I have done a search but cant find the answer.

How long would a garage take to replace the valve stem seals on a 200tdi defender- either removing the head, or if they can do it without?

a bit of blue smoke on startup, which goes within a few seconds, from what i have read is a symptom of them needing replacing. How bad do you let it get before having them done?

Depends on what your own tolerance to the smoke is!! Mine need doing, when really cold its quite smokey for a few minutes until it warms up then runs clean.

If it is just a little smoke on start-up, I really wouldn't worry about it

Not worth disturbing the head just to do the valve stem oil seals - they can be done with the head on - but its not a simple job...............

i would guess 5 seconds. certainly less than 10 seconds.
