I'm just about to change the valve guides on my landy (petrol smoking on overrun, appears to have good compression on all cylinders) and was planning on taking the head right off to change the guides and having had a chat with the mechanic thats done some work for me before and having done a search on here it appears you can change them without removing the head but how do you do it?

Just out of interest more than anything! Cheers!

Sounds like bollocks to me. It might be that changing the valve stem seals alone would cure the smoking problem and I can imagine it might be possible to do that with the head still on. I think it would be better to just take the head off though because you'll then be able to see exactly what's going on and regrind the valves and seats.

I agree. More likely to be valve guide oil seals.

It can be done on some engines with the head on. I think that I have sure a tool for old Ford engines ( ) You need to make sure that both valves are shut and then pressurise the cylinder using and air fitting adapted to go into the spark plug hole.

Anyway, up shot is......easier and safer to take the head off. You could probably get away with leaving the manifold on the head as well.

there is no logic in changing the valve guides with head in situ, if you are going to the trouble of changing the guides do the job properly as other people have said when you take the head off you will see a lot more of what needs doing, including grinding the valves in , i would think twice about using a mechanic if thats the sort of things they say you can do.

there is no way to change valve guides with the head on, you can check the guides,
tack of the rocker cover and rockers, bring one piston to tdc the you can with a fair bit of messing about push down the inlet vave spring remove the cotters and then the spring, you can then wobble the valve stem to asses the wear, if small then fit new seals and reasemble. and yes i know you should remove the head and do aproper job, but valaes do not coke up as the uesd to,

i did this job earlier last week , head off, (complete rocker assembly off) valve clamp the springs and collets out , drop valves thru the head, seals off, then from the underside drift out the guides , clean up, oil , new guides in, re grind valves in, new stem seals, springs and collets back in , rocker assembly back on , job done !
but NEVER seen it done with the head on !

heres a bit of the job
