hiya lads hope this in right place,im a series man myself

father in law got this 1996 defender 90 20 years ago after a farmer rolled in when new

put it back together and kept it going all these years towing sheep and fodder about his fields

its just failed mot on a fair bit of welding ,sounds like rear x member and front end[ive just spoken on the phone with him] so havent seen it for while close up

mechanicly anything it needed it got done,so is a good runner [2.5 d]

anyway hes not sure what to do as the mot man offered him £2000,which i said ,TAKE IT:)

ill try to get up there tommorow and take some pics

he offered it to me for nothing but i havent got room or time, but its tempting......

seems like theres still a liking for these old defenders tho

Mmm, the old , "I tested it and it has failed the MOT, as the tester you may as well sell it to me. It is not worth much.":rolleyes::rolleyes:

Show us the piccies and the failure list. They are still selling for silly money if you can get a ticket on it. Especially if it is all original.

Cheers

You can get nice motor for 4k with little effort so 2k for one with dead chassis sounds kind of dear.

Do agree with Neilly above as kind of fishy

It will be a 300tdi with r380, maybe has insurance history, what is a fair bit of welding. Some would say at that age and needing a fair bit of welding, new chassis time. Best of the defenders which has an affect on price along with the inflated defender price equals a high value even for well used ones.

right update mot ran out yesterday ,hasnt been for it yet as the local landy man who does work/mot for the father in law ,saw it 2 weeks ago and had a glance underneath

it dont look to bad at all to me [ive been restoring classics at home for 27 years]

bulkhead looks really good as does most of the chassis with three patchs i saw
needs some love cosmeticly
so any ideas on a price boys? cheers steve

Weirdly thats the exact same colour as mine, even the laquer is peeling of exactly the same! the exact same style side body windows (rubbish as they leak and rattle) and the same chequer sill covers.
That paint will clean up with a good pressure wash/scrub.

I think neilly is spot on and the mot man is onto an earner.

With no MOT, someone will be along in a mo to take it off your hands for £1800 to 2K. If it the chassis is not too bad and the engine runs gear box OK etc..

Get an MOT and if the mechanicals are OK, you can add a further £800 to that. IMHO.

Cheers

The tub cappings a well gone, the top of the tub underneath is probably badly corroded, the doors look shot, top of the bulkhead looks ok, the chassis sounds very iffy. It would be good to check the chassis mounting points behind the front seats, the ends of the seat box and the footwells & door post bottoms.
I think neilly's estimate is good. Personally I'd walk away from it.

i think you should walk away if a capping held on by rivets scares you,and you think the doors are shot ,besides that its not for sale at the mo,

After cleaning up one 90 and rebuilding another, its easy to say the MOT man is on an earner !
But it needs over 1K in bits unless it needs a chassis then add another 2K then paint plus labour,
If a good job is done it will sell for about 8K
Hardly an earner

That looks in better Nick than my Series 3 when I bought it 3 years ago and paid over 3 grand and spent about £1000 in the first year getting it drivable, it did have a mot but God knows how. If the chassis can be saved it's worth more than 2k definitely. If it needs a new chassis then 2k is probably about right.

Take the beat up bullbar off along with the rear ladder and value will go up. Looks good in pics but it depends on running condition etc. Easy £2k sale, if factory 300tdi, worth a bit more. An mot and tidy up is about £4k easy, again it depends on condition.

cheers lads, he told me last night its never failed to start in 20 years, hes kept on top of mechanicaly cos he has to get about for the sheep and chickens which are his retirment toys
its the original engine

chassis looked pretty good ,the rear x member has got 2 patchs already and a bit of flakey stuff but looks better than my 67 2a one:D

he reckons he is going to sell, so ill wait and see what he does,

It doesn't scare me at all. It just looks to me as though the corrosion will be very advanced in a lot of places, so a hell of a lot to do on it. I'm just looking at photos though.
