I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me what the plastic cover on top of the distributor, immediately under the cap, is called and what it does (see picture). There's a bit broken off and I'm not sure what if anything will happen if I drive it as it is. Not sure how easy it is to get a replacement. Looks as if it's held on by three screws.

Background: I recently had a throttle cable and power steering belt replaced at a local repair garage. (Yes. I know, I could have done it myself but I was very busy and had just had a family bereavement so was trying to avoid potential hassle.) When I picked it up the man told me that he'd noticed a crack in the distributor cap. On the way home I noticed a slight misfire so that fitted. I quickly ordered up a new cap and rotor arm and went to fit them this afternoon. I found that 'the crack' was part of three detached, but still in place, pieces including one of the cable terminals. Immediately underneath is the broken plastic cover as above. I presume it must have been hit fairly hard to have caused that damage and I've no recollection of anything like that happening. Also, the broken edges are remarkable fresh and clean looking and there's a mark on one of the power steering belt adjusting nuts close by that looks as if a spanner's slipped off it. (See other picture.) ;)

I'm sure it's just a protective cap, to try and protect the electronic ignition pickup stuff underneath. I suppose it's done it's job thanks to your mechanic. I'm sure you can get a used one off the Web or maybe rimmer bros, I wouldn't worry about it if it's running fine.=)
