V8 4.0 coolant loss

FIXED :) The clue was the thread on the old header tank which was quite 'sharp', the thread should have a square profile edge (to match the inside of the cap). I think because the old cap was holding too much pressure water had been lost. The previous owner had obviously been taking the cap off & on many times to check (the tank was old so you could not see through it to check the level) and the thread was knackered. So the message is don't assume it is the head gasket like everyone says, there can be other causes for water loss.
