I have searched the forums and am pretty sure that this has not been asked (or at least not asked recently).

I am in Canada. We can import vehicles that are 15 years or older. They do not sell disco's with diesel engines (or in practice with manual transmissions) here. The volume of land rover sales is not high.

I have been wondering whether it would be realistic to buy a 15 year (or greater) disco with a diesel engine and manual transmission and ship it over (1000 pounds to ship plus 19% tax on purchase price of vehicle).

I don't think driving a rhd vehicle would be a big deal (but a pain in the but at drive thru's and parking garages).

My intention would be to keep the vehicle for 5 years or so.

Not a huge number of discoveries on the market here. to give you some idea, someone is selling a diesel disco 1995 (must be an import and conversion to lhd or a diesel conversion) for 6000 pounds. a 2002 disco automatic gas engine with 100,000 miles goes for 3000 pounds.

So my questions in no particular order are:

1) could i find a decent 1997 or older disco in good shape for 3000 pounds in the uk;

2) Would such a car last me five years (I expect to make repairs but not to replace an engine etc.).

3) what are the diesel engines like. I hate to admit it but I will mosly be city driving, with the idea of starting to do some off roading and maybe pulling a boat or a trailer from time to time.

By the way, I would love a defender but from time to time I might need to put two adults and four kids in the vehicle and I have the sense that such a vehicle would cost me 6k plus for a decent 110 (also for my intended use some creature comforts would not be so bad).

Interestingly they are a number of threads out their on importing defenders to north america (americans have to wait 25 years before they can import one! for us it is 15). Defender prices are crazy high.

Any info you have would be really appreciated.

if you look properly you can source a good one for about 1500 pound mate, the engines are really good engines, go for the 300tdi rather than the 200tdi, there good twing motors aswell, it would last you 5 yrs plus if you look after it, just make shore its checked for rust before you get it, they rust badly (not all of them but most) clutch fork should be replaced with strengthened one as break alot, but general servicing and you should be ok mate,

Why not buy one from a LHD country in the first place? we have plenty here in poland and the second language is english so finding a dealer or seller that speaks your lingo is easy enough, prices are lower in Holland, Germany and parts of France too so why stick with one from the UK that has all the associated problems of being RHD and issues with salt corrosion too.

spread your search a little further, dont be afraid of the language barrier, and im sure you either know or can find somebody who speaks French there too.

Good luck with it and keep us informed.

You should be able to find something decent for the money you talk about.

I think the best bet would be to find someone who would be willing to look at them for you here, once it's bought get it fully serviced (while the parts can be aquired cheaply) and then sort out getting it shipped over.

I saw a really nice 96 plate last night, not sure where it was from originally but all the usual rust spots were not present - body mounts were solid as a rock, you could see all the original metal and pressings of the body crossmember and boot floor etc...

X2 buy one from the south of france or spain it will be lhd and have less rust ,rust is the issue the engine will go on and on most rust around the motor here in france you will pay 3500 to 4500 euro for a really good one

Thanks for the responses guys.

The language issue does not really bother me. I was thinking uk because I assumed I was unlikely to find one on the continent, looks like that was a false assumption.

I am still in the research this project phase so I am not going to pull the trigger straight away.

Also does anyone have any suggestions for good sites to search for vehicles on the continent

Im also in Canada and just finished converting my 1999 series 1 disco to diesel. I might be selling it so if you are interested let me know and ill send you some pictures. You would be wise to check with your insurance before bringing a RHD one here....very hard to insure RHD vehicles lately. That is the reason I did the swap.
