Hi guys I'm James new to the forum, not in land rover ownership just yet but would appreciate your guys opinions and what to look out for.

I've seen 3 soo far that I'm keen on all around the same costs about 17-19k all between 68k-80k all seem to have full land rover service histories. All have all the kits ie t.v in the rear all the bells and whistles.

I am a car man and have always admired the range rover but know very little about them in real world terms. What should I look for do they have any particular traits to worry about.

Also I keep seeing Westminsters popping up are they any better than autobiographys? I was told by someone that they wernt as popular?? and is it worth spending the same on a 4.4tdv8 with more miles.

Also just how cable are they off road I quite fancy green laning but slightly worried them at it wouldn't be as capable as they appear.

Many thanks in advance

James

Make sure every gizmo works and look for wet in the N/S rear quarter and spare wheel well.
Make sure you have a few thousand ££££'s spare for getting it fixed.
Fine off road, but really aimed at the school run.

Thanks for the reply I know they havve issues not daft but more wanted to know what to avoid, soo I dont end up with a lemon. But I know they need tlc.

Lack of punch under acceleration is a common sign..

If they are lunched it's a body off job..
Awch that sounds expensive. Hey ho you don't buy one for the running costs. I presume preventative servicing would extend them didn't think l322 had a seperate chassis thought it was a monocoque?

yes the L322 has giant subframes, its a subframe drop job

poor choice of words lol

I'd guess regular oil changes would help prolong their life..

Turbo hoses can split..

EGR's can also cause a lack of power lumpy idle and in some cases a loss of coolant.

Its best to treat them as a wearing part and change them every 90-100k.

the ZF6hp26 tranny needs a service every 60k failure to do this will cause premature wear...

If they are properly serviced this particular ZF box is practically indestructible unlike all the other L322 transmissions.

EGR's are more of an issue than the turbos they can also cause a lack of power lumpy idle and in some cases a loss of coolant.

Speaking of oil changes the ZF6hp26 tranny needs a service every 60k failure to do this will cause premature wear...

Ahhh I see what you mean. Fair enough tbf I've had my current bad gearbox done by a local guy made some difference. Sharp as a tac even at 100k plus. Egrs don't worry me to much whilst I'm sure there an absolute nightmare to get to I've got a good local garage whose ace and he's got a few customers with the same engine and he's pretty confident in the equipment in them. He says he doesn't really get much on them other than the common faults. But thought on here you guys who live with them everyday would point out the stuff to pinpoint to avoid lemons.

Landrover service history will certainly help and check back on the DVLA MOT history to see if advisories keep repeating or evidence of abuse as with any car, buy the best you can afford and come on in the water is lovely, although there is always a risk of choking on a turd but that is a chance you take. If you want guaranteed pain free motoring you are looking in the wrong place :)
