Thought I would provide something to read for those staying at home. Over here we can at least go out and some stores are still open including auto parts so work continues.
Mostly we have been working on the electrical which is a mess. We discovered the alternator was not putting out anything and on investigating discovered the field wire was not connected. No dash warning lamp either. So we wired that up and it worked for a while and then stopped. Somehow the original wire out of the dash to the field went dead. I could not figure out why so installed a new wire and the alternator works fine. We had taken it out and got it tested by the way and it can put out 35 amps. It is a 16ACR.
We purchased some made in India imitation Smiths gauges from eBay and they look quite nice. I tested the water temp gauge by putting the sender in boiling water and it read exactly 100C. So now we have water and oil temperature, volts and eventually oil pressure. We wanted to put a T onto the oil filter adapter where the warning light screws in so that we could add a copper line to an oil pressure gauge but the threads are not standard pipe threads. Nothing will screw in there except the original sender. So we will probably bight the bullet and buy the adapter which lets you use a screw on filter. The one from Atlantic British has two ports for gauge senders. Will also have to get a new sender/switch for the low oil pressure light.
We got the gas gauge working except one of the tank senders is bad. There is a valve on the passenger's side that lets you select the driver's or passenger's tank. This valve has plunger switches on it that are supposed to connect the correct sender to the dash gauge. Unfortunately I broke one of them so now we have a toggle switch on the dash which you now use to select the tank sender for the tank you are using.
Today the front parking lights and one headlight stopped working. Did I say the wiring is a mess ? We puzzled over it for a while but decided to give up for the day. Once we get these working I think we will be ready for some test drives.
Cheers
