UK to Oz cost

From those who have done the trip what roughly does it cost to set up a Landrover and travel to Oz via Russia, China and Asia?

Hi Brian,

just to start you off.

I have not done the trip but will be driving to vlad and shipping direct to Aus from there, I have worked out costings etc and will be budgeting on 13k. thats all camping too over ~8months.

The problem with these posts are that people live differently and there are many variables.

vehicle wise it is also highly variable, what did you have in mind? a Fiat Punto or a MAN CAT? :D see where I am coming from?

China is expensive due to the need to register your vehicle and take a guide. SE asia should be pretty easy to travel through.

where do you plan on shipping from?

Just an idea at present but I have had the 6x6 for 4 years now and have done 1500k's in it. Mainly because I have other projects and time is always the enemy. I have been reading a few posts esp overland with kids and started getting the itch.
Two options, 1 do the reverse, Oz to UK or 2, ship the vehicle to UK and drive it back. The landy was built I believe at a cost of $220,000 to do South Africa to UK and the trip was never undertaken. Time it did so. If I decide to go with the idea, I'd be looking for a couple of other travellers to help share costs as this is one thirsty beast. (5k's / litre). It weighs 5 tonne empty. I can stash 800lt of fuel in it and around 300lt of water which adds another tonne plus supplies of food etc. For a trip like this its got to be the ultimate vehicle. The negative is its size, 2m wide 6.4 long and 2.55 high. I'll have to check container dimensions.

hey mate.. do Oz - UK. Leaving late 2011 or early 2012. Shotgun one of those spare seats! Thats when im heading home to the UK :D:D:D;)
 
container should be ok. 2.55 high may mean you need a high top container over a standard unless you ratchet down your suspension.

Ship to Vladivostock and drive back across Siberia, the Stans, Europe. If you are planning on going back to OZ how about driving UK to South Africa and shipping back to OZ via Durban?

Hi Chris, I'll still be on leave then.

If I get this to UK I'll flog it off and maybe pick up a lightweight or 101 to bring back. Always wanted one of those.
Theres no rust in the sixby at all and at the moment only 101500 k's on the clock so it has plenty of life left in it for someone else to either do the return trip or anything around Europe/Nth Africa.
I took it out on a cadet weekend some time ago when it rained like hell (for here). This place turns into a giant mud hole in the rain. Going down a track with the sixby, the 130 and the 110, the 110 scraped through and the 130 got bogged but the sixby felt like it was still on the highway. Same on the dirt road, while the other vehicles were slipping all over the place the sixby drove straight as. The only problem will be if it does get bogged somewhere it'll take a lot of shifting.

We've just posted a cost update to our website. Compared to Griffdowg's budget - you could probably double ours but as G says, everyone is different. We are just now in Mongolia on our 144th night. We spent 97 nights in Europe before entering Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia (another 46 nights so far). We didn't take a direct route at all but went off all over the place (still do!) exploring and seeing everything we wanted/want - we've been as far as Eastern Turkey before crossing the Black Sea back on our route again by RORO to the Ukraine. Our spends to date are a nail-biting £14,726.52 :eek: for everything as listed on our blog - averaging £102.27 per day or £25.57 per person so far. We've indicated a percentage breakdown of what we've spent where. Hope it helps.

food for though, thanks for posting this. I am hoping to take over 15k with us as a budget is just that... a budget, not actual spendage.

However you do have 2 more mouths to feed :) and we plan on spending as little time as possible in Europe (expensive). I need to PM BigAd to pick his brains on costs to and get a better idea etc.

We are almost at 0.83p for four of us, all in (two adults, two children).
Have added better breakdown now to our blog plus some comments.

Thanks for the post. When you get to Oz I hope you can find time to come through Kalgoorlie. The sixby is next on the list for work. I hope to be able to do a trip somewhere around WA when my next leave is due in June next year. Fuel is my biggest killer economically. This does 20l/100k's.

Have posted 10 month costs of our trip from UK to Malaysia. Thought it might be useful since last update. Bit of an increase in our cost per mile (inclusive of everything i.e. food, visas, accommodation etc.). Currently we are running at 1.10p per mile/0.69p per km for all four of us. Think we might have over-estimated overall costs by 1,000.00GBP (think we double counted this figure somewhere along the way in error but could never go so far back through all bits & pieces to prove). But, we're still running at a total of around 30K so far for the trip. Just to clarify, our diesel only costs are £3,326 (10.5%of total spend) i.e.
£10.87 per day / 11.6p per mile or 07.2p per km for all 4 of us. The other cost is if we were to include everything we have spent and then give a cost per mile.

its frightening when you add it all up , but a lot of people seem to be a bit too optimistic and come unstuck , or never get going .

Still enjoying reading your reports, maybe you ought to think about applying for Palins old job ? :D
 
Hi T2Man, all good this end thanks & feeling fine. Talking reports - we just posted one by our 10-year old - Palin the younger. Thought Griff might like to see too - re: volcano climb - know he's into rocks and stuff.
