Tyres and timing

My SIII has firestone tyres on ... I believe they are still the same ones that it had fitted when it was de-mobbed! They have a very heavy tread pattern and as a result are very noisy. I don't do serious off-roading so a heavy tread is not really needed, my off road is limited to dragging the boat and trailer up the beach and driving on fields (not ploughed).

I find the existing tyres extremely noisy and would like to change them to something a little less extreme and hopefully quieter. What do you good people suggest?

I had it serviced on Friday and the timing was set at 20.5 degrees BTDC. It has been re-set to 6 degrees BTDC but now the engine is less willig to accelerate and very sluggish uphill, now requiring down changes on hills that didn't need them before.

Is there any problem likely to occur if I advance the timing closer to what it was previously?

Sheddy, The Firestone tires the army used, are probably thick walled light truck tires, any radial ply tire with a decent tread pattern would reduce the road noise.
If the vehicle runs better at 20.5 degrees BTDC, I would keep it at that setting, after all, army Land Rover mechanics know their vehicles inside and out, and they must have set the timing at that for a reason, wear in the timing gear in some engines ( notably old Holden motors here), will make use of the timing marks an exercise in futility.

most army mechanics that work on series 111's set the ign timing using a piece of equipement that is all but obsolet in these days of computors. i think the thing is called an ear. the idea is to get the engine running then turn the dissy clockwise (if i remember correctly) until the engine just starts to increase in speed. it should now run as sweet as a nut.

i wasn't aware of a mk 2 ear... unless you mean the after market booster that is sometimes fitted but that is usually only for the older models.

if the mk2 is out there could you furnish me with some details so i get get a pair.

i can confirm from experience that all petrol rovers where set by the mk 1 ear. if the thing still ran a bit off, then the air intake was removed and a smidgin of ox8 (brake fluid to you civvies out there) was poured down the carb with a fist full of revs to clear the throat...works every time.

yer not wrong there.. i remember disappearing up the range at benbecula with a landrover and a tin of ox8. beats taking the head off for a de-coke.
