Tyre wheel question

Was prob a daftquestion lol.. Pitty we cant would look cool, its also apitty titanium is too expensive to remake the transmission components out of that would solve a lot..

If i had the cash id like to try and have the running gear remade from better materials just to see if it could work, with all this 3d printing tech maybe not so far in the future it would become a viable reality..

Due to the ird failure tyre swap thread, just wondered about a question.. Has anyone fittied 15s to the front and 16s to the rear?

Probably the chap one the hard shoulder with a pool of oil under his Freelander.

I just wonder how other "soft roaders" of the same vintage work without the same problems as the Freelander? Such as RAV4, Volvo XC70, Subaru etc.

Rav4's eat clutches and have problems with dual mass flywheels. My mothers car is on its 4th or 5th clutch in 100k miles. All but the last one out in at main dealers. This time we had a solid one in :)

Every car has its problems and weaknesses it's just knowing what they are and how expensive they are

LR's cheap components isn't it not that I know exactly what happens in the failure of the ird or box's but if it was made from stronger components I'm sure it woukd survive

When the vcu fails it simply takes out the weakest parts untill there is no longer any strain. You could beef up the ird and the diff only for it it take out your gearbox splines and cv joints etc etc just moving the problem along.

Although I agree there are areas they could have payed more attention to like where the rear subframe bolts to and just a better 1.8 engine?

Done a bit of reading now. The Volvo 4x4's use a Haldex system where the viscous coupling for the rear drive is hydraulically controlled via solenoid valves, so it only drives the rear when the traction control wants it to. The early RAV4 has a centre diff rather than a viscous coupling (like a defender).

So it would appear that the FL has a cheaper, less sophisticated set up which makes it vulnerable to mis-matched tyres.

The Haldex system is quite expensive, but brilliant. I had one on my previous vehicle, a Skoda Yeti. It was very able off-road, as good if not better than all the reports. Let down by ground clearance.

When the vcu is in lockup/woundup eg in constant operation due to mismatched tyres the strain on the ird/finaldrive must be immense , and if driven to the extent of 70 to 80 mph over time , I would think most other makers components would fail also if the same design (vcu ) was used and abused in the same way ;)

It's just the same damage that would occur if you drove any 4x4 on the road for miles and miles with the diffs locked..... Something would go bang.. It's just a matter of what.

So is the Freelander. Yeti lift kit?

Yeh, has me baffled to, unless they are just as bad - but I think not. I can only conclude that the GKN VC is only used in the Freelander and it is freeking useless!
