Tyre pressures when running tubes

When I replaced the tyres on my Series 3 with some mud tyres I didn't run any tubes in them as the tyres that were in them to start with wern't tubed. I lowered the pressure down to 25psi and managed to have a tyre pop off the rim when off roading. I'm assuming I'm going to have to run tubes to allow me to run low pressures without risk of the tyre popping off the rim?

With tubes fitted how low would I safely be able to run my tyre pressures when off road without risk of them popping off?

Your tyres were not designed for tubes ....... but your wheels are .... I think.

Tubeless tyres are designed NOT to be used with tubes. The inside of the carcase has diagonal ridges that are reputed to cut their way into the tube.

Me? I drive tubeless tyres with tubes, never had a problem.

I also paint the rim with Wayoyl. Stops it going rusty, allows the tyre to slide over the rim easy using tyre levers. But I'm told this is not good practice. I've been doing it for at least ten years, without problems.

I went for Snatch Land Rover rims from Vass in Ampthill, Beds. 6.5j x 16, bit wider than standard Series III, but tubeless rims and super tough too. £20+VAT each ex Mil take-offs.

£20 per rim .... hurts just a little. But when you realise that you then don't have to buy tubes ......... How much are tubes nowadays?

Correct w3526602, majority of tyres now are designed to be run without tubes.

Maybe you can get away with running tubes on short trips in UK where the temperature is on the lowish side mostly, but here in Aus, high temps and distances, it is a receipe for disaster, as the tubes rub away inside, heats up tires quickly and causes many blowouts.

My tyres say they should be tubed. What is the lowest pressure I can run them at when off roading without risk of them popping off the rim?

so some do use radials without tubes on series rims?? Are the rims airtight???

I have run Series rims without tubes, didn't have any problems. Ignorance is bliss? But once you know you shouldn't ............ If you must do it, think about a smear of Waxoyl to seal any pinholes?

The advantage of tubes is that you can fix your own punctures at the roadside (or side of mountain) Carry spare tubes, dedicate the occasional Sunday morning to fixing them by the dozen.

Repeat ..... painting the inside of the rim with Waxoyl smooths out the existing rust, stops new rust developing, and makes the tyre slide onto the rim easily when using tyre levers. Disadvantages????
