Hi,

Apologies if this has been answered before on the forum but would be very grateful for some help with replacing my tyres on my 88. At the moment she is shod with various Avon 6.00x16.

Would be very grateful if someone could suggest the metric equivalent - road biased as most of my driving is on road. The LR handbook suggests she can go up to 7.50x16.

Local tyre store suggested General Grabbers which look very nice (although I think the value of the tyres would be more than the vehicle!)

Thanks very much for your help.

A 6.00 x 16 is a 150/100R16 which is unobtainable. Available alternatives 175/80R16, will give you the same sort of height albeit about an inch wider.

7.50 x 16 normal metric equivalent is a 235/85R16 again a bit wider than a 7.50.

600x16 crossplies can still be had, but they're not cheap. 750x16 are more available BUT are a bit too wide for a standard 88 rim and will bugger up your gearing and your speedo reading.
The modern radial equivalent should be about 180/80 to give you the right rolling diameter.
Don't forget to change the spare as well 'cos you cant mix radials and crossplies on the same axle.

You can get them as military take-offs. Cheap. http://www.vass.co.uk/treads.pdf
This is a good deal on Michelin 7.50's fitted to 6.5J tubeless rims, wheel & tyre from £40+VAT 50% used up to £75 +VAT brand new. http://www.vass.co.uk/specials.asp?TyreID={B26B763C-6C20-4D9B-81E9-18C3EB2BB769}

If you want to keep the original wheels 205/80R16 are probably the closest readily available size. Only a bit larger diameter than a 600x16

I am running 205/16s on my 88
At present Avon Rangemaster (also known as Avon Strangebastards)
They perform well for a road tyre, not brilliant in snow or mud but on the plus side seem to last forever. Just ask for 205/16 no need to put the 80 in as it is a standard profile tyre.
Plenty about as it is a Discovery size tyre.
