My original resistor has now finally fallen apart (partly due to no mud shield fitted which I am planning to rectify). I know I could look up the resistance required and just replace it with a small modern resistor hidden away somewhere, but I like the originality of the old fashioned exposed coil wound one.
Does anyone know where could find an original/original style replacement?

OK, then try a scrappy and look for a heater resitor that the wire type, I think our Zafira has one, you can then mod this into a series shape or or swap the resitance wire over and crimp it.

When I rebuilt my series there was an ebay seller with newly made copies of the original style resistor. This is what I used, but they don't seem to be available anymore.

I also thought it was supposed to be mounted inside the heater fan housing so it is cooled during operation.

This thread and the other about heaters has got me looking to improve my fan, its all noise and current and no blow. I think I can fit a modern motor and radial fan, doing the searches I found a few pictures of Smiths heaters, the flat square ones (like mine) do seem to have a resistor inside.

Putting the resistor inside the fan is a win win situation if it gets hot it will be cooled by the air flow thus heating the air flow a weany tad.

Thanks to this thread I've solved a long standing problem with my heater drawing too much current. After seeing pictures of Smiths heaters with resistors inside I took mine apart and found a resistor wired across live and earth! Corrected the wiring and now have a fan that works properly and draws a sensible amount of current. It must have been like that for ages as the heater was one of the few bits of wiring I didn't redo, just hooked up the existing wires, should have checked.
