need to put twin pulleys on my altenator as it demolishes vee belts at an alarming rate. i have a larger altenator than standard (not huge) think its 70ampish,but as alot of my driving is done at night out in the sticks with main beam, eberspacher, stereo and wipers going (i live in scotland an it rains alot) the single belt just can't cope. the alignment is perfect an i always use 'gates' or 'goodyear' belts and i have a bin full of old ones! dare not fit spot lights until i sort this. is an aircon pulley the answer?

What sort of belt damage are you getting?

they are just plain worn out, allways lots of black dust about the timing chest, gotta adjust em every couple of weeks. alingments perfect and it is a genuine lucas altenator and pulley fitted new about 18 months ago. did think of fitting a larger pulley as that cured a similar problem i had on a boat once but i would rather go down the twin pulley or even twin alteator route as i would like to fit more lights!

Sounds like something on the tensioning side of things is not right, there should not really be a problem with the bigger alternator on the belt.

Does the water pump turn freely, is there anything else that has excess resistance?

morning guys, thanx 4 tips but the crank pulley was changed about 4years an 44k ago (still worth a look tho) an the waterpump is fine (even fitted leccy fan) pretty shure its due to the load from the alt as when it does go its allways @ 6:am in a blizzard or pishing rain after the eberspacher has been on all night! what about military ones do they have twin crank/waterpump pulleys?

na never fit owt from the farmers market or 'paddock' i've fit enough ****e from china in the past so i only use oem gen or better ,the belts are usualy spa1025 or spz1024 don't seem to make any difference, is that the right section? ta

Not sure which is the correct one - I am sure that there's a difference between SPA & SPZ.
Youv'e checked the alignment & tension & alls OK, have you checked the profile in the pulleys? Check both profiles byturning the belt inside out and placing into the pulley groove, make sure that the belt is only riding on the tapered sides and not touching the at the bottom.
As said there is a difference but it's been a while since I've done anything with V belts, [usually spec polyVee or toothed for industrial nowadays] - perhaps you could use one of the later models polyVee from a 200/300/td5?

cheers i'll give it a shot tommorow. still would like to fit twin belt crank pulley though if anyone has a part no. for that and the waterpump.
