Hi, just to add to the other long list of problems I have with my RR I alos have a starting issue. When I turn the key the car turns over very slowly, and sometimes starts and sometimes doesnt. First of all I put this down to a duff battery but after changing the batt it still does the same.

When I started it today I left the key turned for about 10 seconds and I could smell a burning smell - obviosuly not good.....

Has anyone any idea why its turning over to so slowly? When its started it runs perfectly - apart from the complimently overheating problem of course :D

many thanks Datatek... do you know where the starter motor is on a 4.0 1995? I have looked but in this light I cant see it or am I just being blind?:confused:
 
:doh:Looked on RAVE and it involves removing the gearbox accoustic cover etc.... looks like another fun job... so much for being able to attempt to cure my overheating problem tomorrow.... oh the fun of P38's:violin:

could be a lazy starter motor [ field coil has got hot at some time and cooked the windings] this could give symtoms of a flat battery, also check cable connections are clean and tight:)
 
You have a bad connection somewhere along the starter loop. Turn the engine for a few seconds, then feel all connections to and from starter. The bad connection will be warm. Check earth strap from engine to chassis that's a favourite. Remove and clean any that are warm and refit. If there are no warm connections but starter is warm your starter maybe failing.
 
thanks wammers, dont suppose you know the best or easiest way to get to the starter do you? ive looked at RAVE and tbh i am a little confused about where its actually located...
 
Alex, I have been following your threads for a week or so now. I think if I was you at this particular time I would be 6 foot under by now with a Landrover crest as my headstone with a suicide note pinned to it
 
haha thanks david. tis true i am starting to get slightly stressed out with it all but i did have a good read of this forum before buying a p38 so i did know what im letting myself in for. also i am actually considering buying another one thats just popped up on ebay - how stupid am i - i think ive got the fricking p38 bug
 
I know how you feel. I had the same issue as you and ended up buying a new engine. I was'nt a happy bunny at the time but now its done I grin like a chesire cat. Runs like a dream. Good luck, I presume you are looking to buy another P38 to either use yours as spares or you are going to perform, an engine swap??

i was going to buy the new one as a keeper, maybe swap a few parts over that mine has (light grilles, bullbar, spots, 2000 lights etc) and then just sell the rest of it for parts.

just have to put it down to a very expensive mistake - not that ive told "her indoors" how much we would lose :cool:
