I see Turners no longer make their own td5 cyclinder heads - they import them from a 'Spanish supplier'. The price is down a bit, but no longer comes with new fuel regulator fitted nor bolts, so probably more expensive....!

Anyone any experience or views on this development?

I need a new/recon head very soon - Defender in bits in the garage, and confirmed cracked head (No.1 inlet casting 'predictably' apparently).

£1600 from LR isn't going to happen.

Cheers, A

Hiya, PM me if you like and I can phone you. I had a new TD5 head from Turners about 5 months ago (see my other threads) after I developed "porosity" on the fuel rail around number 2 injector... and blew the turbo, head etc etc... Land Rover told me to bugger off (3 1/2 old 90 with 70,000 miles). I beleive Turners are suppling AMC Heads (that what I had) with the improved fuel railing and stronger internals - can fault it in terms of quality (which better than the orignal LR Lump (that was a rough casting) and so far with 8000 under the belt no problems, Turners were very helpfull as well and I thought they had a deal on at the moment?

Turners never did make their own heads, they are selling the AML or AMC heads which are cast in Spain.Good product, well finished - had one a few months back as a complete engine. When I took the top off to fit the injectors I was amazed that the metal around where they go in is almost twice as thick - what LR should have done in the first place !

Cheers 8 - goes to show what little I know! Had a hugely positive chat with tyc too. If they are the 'right' price at the mo I might have to do it.... Cheers, A

Eightinavee, were you talking about a 300TDi or a TD5 with the AMC head? How was the performance? I'm asking because I'm trying to source 2 bare 300TDi heads with the 'AMC' casting nark on the outside. Why? Well, a good friend here in the states owns a Def 110 with only 40k km on a completely new engine. No mods have ever been done to this engine in any way. It ran like all the stock 300TDi's I've ever driven...mediocre. It dropped a valve so we had to replace the head, one piston, one rod, two valves, etc. The replacement bare 'AMC' head anmd other parts were acquired in Addis Ababa Ethiopia by another friend. We bolted the engine back together and took it for a drive. Bloody hell! This truck runs like a modded V8! It will literally snap your neck back on acceleration from a standing start. No other changes have been made. We can only attribute the power gains to the head. Has anyone else experienced such a phenomenon???

No,the conversation was just about the TD5. I cant see why the AMC heads should make any difference to the performance unless it was ported and other work was done to the engine itself. They are not meant as performance parts, just replacement for original.

Therein lies the mystery! No performance work or tuning was done...nothing. However, the power gains must be upwards of 20%. I've not seen anything like it! The only explaination is that replacement head. I wasn't there when the shakedown drive was first done. When they told me how much stronger the engine was I was VERY skeptical. Even when I got behind the wheel I wasn't expecting great things. However, when I put the throttle down I was absolutely startled at the acceleration. It defies description.
