We have had a problem over the last few weeks highlighted when towing the van of serious lack of power ok cruising but crap uphills, anyway i have gone down every route i know and come up blank :confused: when yesterday i saw the small rigid air pipe at the back of the turbo that goes behind the engine and round to the fuel pump area had perished underneath probably because of the heat from the exhaust, anyway i bogded a better pipe on it and immediatly got back to full power! well a bit better for a TDi.
There was a bit of induction noise but not to bad but it has now stopped. really just a tip for others to look for if similar problem occurs.
Oh well at least i have now finished of the intercooler, greased absolutly everything again! and have yet another lift pump on her.:)
 
thats your turbo wastegate acctuator, seems like you were dumping precious boost generating pressure straight to the exhaust pipe
 
It's not your waste gate actuator.....its the pipe that carries pressure to the fuel pump diaphragm that moves the needle to inject more fuel when you are getting more air cos the turbo is working...the was gate pipe doesn't go
behind the engine and round to the fuel pump

It must have melted that time you did 110 mph on the motorway...:D Check the diaphragm in the fuel pump.They can get stuck in the closed position so you dont get any boost fueling.
 
Danny quite possibly!:D, well now the new intercoolers on and the pipe has been completly changed today, stuck a new recon rad on and have now recieved the K&N filter did an oil change full filters and did the dodgy lift pump, 2nd battery for charging and as a spare, boot floor redone (come up like new), steps and the arches all done, all this to find out the bloody main belt is on its last legs so had to do that too, Danny she still will whip along do think the speedo is well out but at least she can pull the skin of a pudding now.

how do you know when there is a air block in the Radiator after flushing it?
 
Hello Cossie, Ive been having similar lack of power when towing the van up hills so thought I would check the turbo to fuel pump pipe and guess what? It was all melted at the point round the back of the engine:eek:, just like yours.Maybe Ive got to the bottom of my poor towing problem after all:).Can you buy the pipe with fittings or do you just cut your own to length.
 
Danny, i got a 5mm hose from my local shop for £2 a ft much more flexible and it has metal shrouding all round it, we have just towed 476 miles to Scotland and wow what a differance seriously. possibly the intercooler as well though but to be fair i would suggest everyone checks it if they lack power easy to check and bound to be gone, Danny you been doing 100+ then cheeeeeeecky, did fly past a Disco on the border labouring up a steep incline had 10mph on him and you know thats a lot with best part of 1800kg behind you, He did come past me going down the slope with van at 70+ the bloody loony van waving about everywhere.:doh:
 
Does this apply to TD5's as well? Just wondered before I go rummaging around looking for a pipe I might not have!
 
Just got back from camping trip in Newark.Seemed much better this time and held lock up for longer.Before it would drop out of lock up at the slightest incline which was very anoying.On the steep climb over the pennines I could still only manage 30 mph flat out locked in 2nd but that can only be expected towing 1200 kg.
 
hi rollin danny.
can you tell me is there any way of checking this pipe other than a visual check? when i bought mine it had no power and found to splits under the pipe fron the intercooler to the inlet manifold.thinking that maybe if these have gone maybe that could be on its way out ? i tow a 1500k van and find i need to change down a little more than i thought ?

Hi Symmy.Its easy enough to do a visual check but I did read once that you can disconect the pipe at the fuel pump end and put it in your mouth while reving the engine up.You should get enough pressure to inflate your cheeks .I dont know if this is recomended as there could be hot gases in the pipe.Probably better to put something like a balloon over it and see if it inflates.
 
I have just replaced the clutch release fork and cam belt. Didn't notice any pipe round back of engine. Symptons as described by others, noisy turbo lack of power. What about collapsed air filter?:eek:

Just spent some of my lunchtime loooking - you must understand mine isn't the sort of office where people lift the bonnets on theri Mercedes and Jaguars - but today is different. Hard Plastic pipe from the Turdo, looks good. Did find the Intercooler inlet pipe disconnected - (never connected up after last engine remove) put that back on. can't wait for 4:30 to leave and test it! Well can't wait for 4:30 anyway!
