Thanks for any help, there's a few answers on the forum, but just want a confirmation or not, if possible.

starting from cold; starts with a puff of black smoke, let it tick over for some 15secs, gently pressing throttle a couple of times at standstill before moving off. seemingly no problem.

however at standstill at around 1500/1600 rpm (hard to tell without rev counter, but i think it's about that, or just above when the turbo kicks in) there's puffs of blue smoke, this disappears when above the above revs, and only when the engine is cold. no loss of oil.

is it the turbo seals? if so how easy/cost to change them?

tahnks again, cheers, mark

unless you are able to do the job i would buy a replacement turbo unit, 1 thing springs to mind tho if it were the seals in the turbo you would get white smoke this would be more visual if you were to let the engine tick over for a few mins then rev it up, and then you would get a thick white smoke, with out having more history of the problem. ie oil showing on the turbo,if a seal goes there is no inbetween it would smoke all the time, can you give more detail

thx for the replies;

no white smoke, only blue. no loss of compression either.

"oil showing on the turbo"? sorry for the daft question, but where on/in the turbo can I check?

i'll check tomorrow re: revs and turbo signs of oil and get back to you.

thx again, mark

when i sucked a load of my air filter after a wet play session in salisbury into my intercooler i had blue smoke and a very slow discovery !

no, no turbo whistling.

no intake of water.

i only noticed it after a brief trip to the alps, just wondered if making the turbo struggle up steep hills in thin air, does any damage?

thx again, mark

like the man said whip the pipe off the turbo and check it's not all clogged up to begin with....where in hampshire are you ? i'm just over the border dorsetshire side.

ok if yer having problems pop over i'm in cranborne which is about 10 miles north of ringwood aboot 1/2 mile from the border !

a puff of blue smoke on opening of the throttle sounds to me like its probably not the turbo.

Check the crankcase cyclone breather on the side of the engine - mine has stopped working which is resulting it opil being pulled into the turbo, so when you rev it from cold, it pulls this settled oil in in a 'lump' an you get blue smoke. Then, when its warm, the oil is vapourised so you can't see any smoke.

If it was turbo, rings or valve guides, i would expect the smoke to get worse when it was warm, as thie oil is thinner.

Take this breather off, and look at how oily it is where it joins the air intake.

He's your man .... take his advice.

There is always a little oil wandering around turbo diesels, and it eventually reaches a cylinder.

If the car is going fine, not using oil, running with clean exhaust on a 70 mph cruise, then stop worrying. Loads of Landyzoners are wishing right now their Landies could do that!
