Well I have found out what the noise was on the engine, manifold gasket had blown, came to take the exhaust manifold and there was nothing holding it in at the bottom, no studs, bolts or anything.

Never noticed before if they were actually there but by looking at the block it had been blowing for a while due to the build up of soot.

This brings me on to the next problem I have; thought I would give the turbo a once over as it was off, this is what I have found:

Quite a few little chunks out of the fins.

A bit of movement in the shaft, click on photo for video:

Does this look really bad?

The turbo cartridge is what most turbo repair shops install when you send a turbo in for refurbishment and is a good choice. Replace all seals and gaskets and you should be good.

To fully rebuild turbos doing compressor or and turbine wheels installation on the turbine shafts etc., calls for expensive equipment and infrastructure.

You must have an accurate balancing machine and a good stock of parts and expertise. The process is a lot more complex that the few thrown up videos shown on youtube.

Even swapping out the cartridges needs extreme care and accuracy, one slightly bent wheel fin or nicked fin can cause issues and worse yet a disintegrated turbo.

Hope you found out why that turbo took a beating before you install the refurbished one.
