Turbo for 2004 TD5 Disco

My Turbo is on it's last legs. The main stealer has quoted £750 for a replacement and the best price I can see for a new one is £445 from Paddocks. I have spotted a second hand one on eBay but this is from a 2000 engine. I understand LR changed the Turbo in 2001 and there are two part numbers.

Does anyone know whether I can just fit the old style turbo in the newer engine?

Also, if anyone has a post 2004 one knocking around for three bob and a big orange, I would be very interested.

What are the symptoms? (Not that I know the answer to your question mind, but turbos are a bit Harry Potter to me - just a magic thing that makes it go faster - and I'd be interested to know how you can tell if they are dying)

It squeals like faff between 1500 and 3500 revs and is getting worse. I have had a look inside: there isn't much play in the shaft, but you can see uneven wear marks on the body.

I seem to have got an answer to my question. I went into my local independent (BG Landrovers between Ross and Monmouth - top place). The old one fits on the newer engine, and in fact, the old one has superceded the new one in the parts list.

Ah yes, that makes sense to me.

The old ones are usually the best!

A turbo repair kit costs about sixty pounds and takes a couple of hours.

Job done.

Turbos are dead easy to fix, and a source of vast wealth to the punters who fix them with £60 kits.

Where do the people with vast wealth get them from? Google is stumped.

PS I am no longer a person of vast wealth as I just bought a turbo for £175 off fleabay last night.
