i am after a tubular winch bumper to fit my puma defender. i know relatively little about winches and winch bumpers. but here is my idea, i am looking to buy a tubular winch bumper that will fit my landy without me having to trim any of the grille away. then when funds allow fit a winch.

can anybody steer me in the right direction on where and what bumper to get
would i be better to buy the bumper and winch together or can i buy the bumper first and the winch at a later date?

You'll not really find one that won't require cutting because if not it would stick out so far you would loose a lot of angle. The best ones sit above the chassis that way they compensate for the winch.

If you insist on not cutting anything you could get something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WINCH-BUMPER-...arParts_SM&hash=item2310d834b0#ht_1379wt_1141 or this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WINCH-BUMPER-...arParts_SM&hash=item2310d8348e#ht_1379wt_1141

The second one is nice but there is a big overhang.

cheers matt tdi think ill go for one of those! great price and english built. very similar to the nomad bumper. which one did you friend go for? did he go for the slightly extended one or the close fitting bumper? does he run a winch with his? any idea what make/model winch? thanks

He went for the aircon shadow bumper, even though his 90 didn't have aircon. He done this so he didn't have to cut away any of the grill, because there's a large alisport I/C behind there that sits very tightly to the front grill.

He's running a Goodwinch goldfish winch, which by all means is an excellent pound for pound winch with an impressive line speed even under load.

Overhang doesn't really interfere with the approach angle too much, but it is lifted 2".

I have to say, if I don't opt for the hydraulic option on my own Defender (when I get it!) it'll probably be the setup I go for too.

i have heard all good comments about those goodwinch winches! i will have a huge intercooler in a few weeks too so think ill go for what your mate has done, should be getting my landy a good lift kit too Challenge Kit Gwyn Lewis 4x4 Challenge Suspension Kit can be fitted to Defender 90, 110, Discovery 1, RRC. The lift kit for winch challenge competitions, off road events. which should help with the approach angles like you said. thanks for all the help mate :)

Granted i dont have a puma but mines a tidy TD5 90 and i cut into mine the other day to do the same thing. Its 2 vertical cuts that once filed down and bumper fitted you can hardly tell there there. i did mine with a junior hacksaw.

I also have a full size intercooler because of an engine re-map. I have the firstfour tubular bumper. I went for the middle one of the 3 and my winch(not a goldfish) its a Warn with solenoid bridge fits just fine. you have to trim the actual grill to fit it but IMHO looks better than the aircon model(the one that requires no cutting). before you buy, i would at least have a look at the bumper on a 90 and see if its what you want. because damn that thing sticks out far!

Just my 10 pence worth, i understand it may be difficult to take a saw to your nice toy.

Will PM you some photos of mine if it helps?

Good luck

Matt

thanks for that matt could you pm me some photos that would be great! so did you go for the 'slightly extended' winch bumper in the end?
thanks for this :)

It's a mere matter of opinion really, but I don't think it sticks out that far. And certainly with a lift, won't harm your approach angle too much unless you are going in for very serious stuff.

That's my thoughts anyway

Check out MM4x4 site. I recently bought a tubular bumper of theirs and fitted a cheap basic winch no cutting involved. (td5 def )

for your bumper, there are many out there like the nomad ones and the terrafirma ones. I have a firstfour shadow winch bumper and its pretty much the same as the others i think. but they do 3 different sizes and there very helpful.

Will get some closer pics of the bumper tomorrrow(fender is out for MOT today) but here it is from the front.
