i need alittle help trying to work out how i can use alternators on my 2.5na engine i have all the mounts and belts and its in.

but the wiring....
we are using this landrover for lamping rabbits and foxes search lights and things having so many lights and needing them all!

i want to use the first alternators for everything as normal engine dash lights etc etc and use the second on a sparate battery for the lights and search lights. how can i wire this in so the batterys are completey different not conected together? the lights will be earthed straight to the battery and the alternator live feed again straight to the battery but how can i or do i need to earth the second alternator to the battery and not the engine??? or am i thinking this through wrong?

if thi makes sence......

cheers merry christmas to you all!

I don't see the need for two alternators when all you have to do is upgrade the one you have if need be and use either a simple split charge system (manual change over switch)as i take it the engine won't be running when the lights are in use and even if that's not the case as long as you have a means of isolating the vehicle battery from the auxiliary battery's there shouldn't be a problem.

All you need to do is earth the second battery to the chassis and take the live feed from your second alternator to your second battery + terminal. To power all of your lights just wire them straight to the second battery :)

You will also need to wire in an exciter wire to get the alternator started but yeah its is that simple really. Dont forget to add a second alternator light to your dash or fit gauges so you can see any impending failures...
