Trying to get key cut

Just been to Timpson's to get a key cut for my TD4 which I purchased only last week as it came with only one key and one fob so thought I had nothing better to do than get a key cut but the assistant put the key in a machine which then came up on the computer saying the key had to be chipped and this would cost between £35 and £50. so have not gone down that road yet. Any help will be appreciated. Also I take it to get an extra fob that too will have be chipped by Land Rover?

that is reasonable go to LR and you can pay upto £160 for just the key

I just paid £50 at my local cobbler's. Didnt even consider going to the dealer,s as I work at a Peugeot main dealer and I no how much they they charge Its extortion. L R wouldn't be any different.
