trying to buy my first Land rover

I am looking at buying a 110 csw 200tdi, however an engineer friend of mine has put the doubters on me buying the 200tdi and suggested the 300td5. I saw the "what engine is best" poll but would like to know what I am getting with the 200 with regards general maintainance. Anything I should be aware of before buying one.

No offence but I don't think you should bother with this "mates" advice as he doesn't appear too clued up. There never was a 300td5 it's either a 300tdi or TD5 both of which are different engines.
200tdi has a good reputation for reliability & diy friendliness but is more agricultural.
300tdi is more refined gives the same power & is still diy friendly. Some models had problems with cambelt failure though most will be sorted.
TD5 has much better power & refinement but is more dependent on electronics & early ones had some reliability issues.
Most people on here will have their own opinion as to what's best, but your mates opinion is the least useful.

plus you've got to be gay to drive a TD5 powered land rover

Its been a while since I signed in as I forgot my pass word. Any how just got the 110 300tdi and now in need of a manual, I've looked on amazon but read mixed reviews on differnt haynes books. Can anyone tell me the best manual for maintenance and a 110 cs utility 1987 with a 300tdi engine and geerbox? I want to get started on turning it into something special... I just drove it back home from the Uk to the south of France and she purred all the way but she needs attention in the engine/ suspention and seals. Living down here with the French means that I have to buy on line. thanks for ur comments, baptism of fire springs to mind....!!

Haynes manual has done it for my old man the past 20 odd years, i'd go with that!

Or thier's RAVE, i'm old style so prefer haynes
