hey guys.

Was talking to a friend of mine and he was saying it should be possible to put an intercooler off a truck into a defender (td5 on aircon). now hes a mechanic so i reckon hes clued in enough on this sort of thing but im just wondering if anyone here has done it?? if ye have, id love to see som pics and get advice on a donor truck, any problems a can expect and how much i should pay.... thanks guys.

well i thing he must be joking !

i have a intercooler for a nissan skyline on my defender, a 300tdi, as its about the same width as your normal truck one you will be struggling as you dont have the depth i have.

just looked at my mates td5, and as a motor engineer my self i wouldnt bother trying.

thanks mark,

I had considered it a bit farfetched...
Tell me, does having a skyline intercooler make much of a difference?? im looking to ugrade but dont have the money to spend on a £450 allisport one!!

Any ideas what would be a good donor for the job?

thanks:)

It int the make or model of vehicle the intercooler came from. It's the size that matters. Bigger the intercooler the better it works but at the end of the day all an intercooler does is cool down the air entering the turbo. and once it reaches a certain size the gains become negligible

my intercooler makes a big difference mainly because of the amount of boost its running and the other engine mods ie its now 2.8 litre, reworked pump and injectors. its close to 200bhp.

as for yours my mates td5 got a power chip on it, straight through exhaust and a better air filter, its goes very well indeed.

he looked at replacing the intercooler but as its not a bad size anyway hes left it alown for now.

as yours too has air con you will be looky to find owt else to fit other that a custom made job as from allysport or fearns.

i would go down the chip route first, my mate started there first.:)

Thanks a million for all the advice. Just realised my first thread has a typo, it should say 'no aircon' sorry:) as for the chipset ive a few worries, the main one being about a thread read somewhere that was advising an improved intercooler if i was to put in a chipset due to the increased heat that it evokes on engine?! what ye think? load of poo?

the chip wont cause any more engine heat in my eyes, the faster you go the more cool air goes through the cooler and rad and round the engine !

my mates has been chipped now for 5 years and has done 90k he drives like a **** on and off road, i couldnt keep up with him in my van down the motor way the other day !

hes had no problems with his at all, tho he does service it every 6000 miles, well oil and filters.

Just an obvious word of warning - the engine was designed to have a specific power output, and the more you try and crank up the power it delivers the closer to the tollerence level you get, so don't be too suprised if something fails (dramaticly or not)

I can turn the turbo up-to 3bar, and it will make my 2.5TD go like the clappers for a while...................................
