Trouble fitting brake shoes after fitting new wheel cylinders.

Rebuilding front axle new swivels fitted and thought it would be a good idea to replace all the wheel cylinders as they looked pretty ropey and some were seized.
Drums are twin leading shoe with 11 inch drums. The problem I have is that drums won't go back on. On closer inspection the distance between the end of the piston and the back edge where the other shoe fits is 1/8 of an inch longer than the cylinders that were originally fitted. Also the new cylinders are alloy with a 1/8 imch thick strip of steel fitted where the shoe fits.
I'm pretty sure if I remove this steel stripcthe shoes will go on no problem, has anyone come across this before?

Shoes definitely fit into slot difficult to show fully in the picture. Taking some metal of the shoes is an option that I hadn't thought of. Not really confident that removing the steel inserts is safe in the long term.

Ok then... in that case, yes, some metal off the shoes is probably the best bet, I certainly wouldn't attempt to remove the steel insert on the cylinders.
Far from an ideal situation though and I'd definitely be in touch with the suppliers of the cylinders with a complaint.
Edit: Best thing to do would be to fit some quality cylinders and send those Bearmach ones back.
 
The brake shoes need to fit all the way into the slot to be stable. I do not think that shortening them is a good idea.

I wouldn’t modify the shoes or the cylinders personally and I suspect that the steel insert is there to stop the steel pad wearing the aluminium cylinder

I expect you right flat but recon it has not been machined down to the correct level.
 
Contacted Bearmach today, said they wasn't aware of a problem but apologized and are putting some Delph replacements in the post and looking into the problem with their supplier.
Really impressed as I never purchased directly from them, but hoped they might be able to sort it out quicker than going back to where I bought them.

How did you contact them I have an issue with one of there master cylinders leaking from the resevoir to cylinder join need to try and get them to replace it?
Has only been on since last september!
 
Had the same problem today with my 101 FC new cylinders and shoes couldn't get drums on so fitted part worn left shoe and will bed them in and adjust then replace worn shoe after a few klms....
 
New Delph cylinders arrived this afternoon, now fitted no problems just need to bleed and adjust shoes back up.
To contact Bearmach they have an online shop with contact details and give a 3 year warranty. I thought that if this was as I suspected a new problem with the manufacturer of the cylinders they would want to know.
The chap I spoke to, think his name was Jason knew his stuff about series brakes and did his best to resolve the issue.

Tried yesterday through the Bearmach warranty section and they just told me to contact the company I bought the item from.
Awaiting a reply from them.
Tried fitting a new seal between the resevoir and cylinder but the spacer is actually to thick preventing the seal being compressed.
Toying with fitting a remote resevoir.
