my Hippo and i used the top heat setting but kept it about 1.5"-3" away whilst moving it all the time.
you can see when the surface just manages to melt and then you move to keep the flow going.

try it on an area that won't be seen if it goes Pete Tong, then just have the bottle to keep on the heat and viola...you'll know when it's right to move..trust me. Well worth the effort cos it remakes it with itself ...if you know what i mean.
