transmission fluid

I'm trying to check the fluid level in the auto box of my disco 1 300tdi. the fluid is really difficult to see. any tips? also can you drain the fluid and start again?

If your fluid is to the Dexron spec then you should see it on the dip stick as the colour is a translucent red, if you can't then the level may be low and not showing on the dip stick. You can only drain fluid that's in the boxes sump half of the quantity will remain in the torque converter which cannot be drained.

Try dipping it with the engine not running. This wont give you the correct level, but you should be able to see the fluid so you know what you are looking for, if it then doesn't show with the engine running you know that the level is too low
