Transmission Box

Hi all

I have taken my Freelander to the garage to have it looked at as it sounds terrible...! They said its the transmission box which will cost me just over a grand..! 800 quid part & 3oo quid to fit it..! Any1 else had one of these go wrong how much did it cost...!

oh well **** happens..

What went wrong with it?

Bung it on the freelander bit matey, though I must say I don't recollect reading any of their posts saying negative things about that marvelous vehicle.

To 1daymaybe,

Just watch the viscous coupling on the propshaft as these are prone to tighten up, knocking out the transfer box or the rear diff. If it is faulty and you dont replace it, the same thing can happen again to your new units.

I have given the garage the go ahead to fix it £1050 quid OUCh..!

I think it was called the Transfer Box is that correct not the transmission box!! & if so can this lead to other problems or should this sort it all out.

HI 1DAYMAYBE.
The transferbox is also known as an IRD unit.The viscous is situated on the rear propshaft and acts as a differential between the front and rear.
They tend to tighten up and put stress on the next component in line such as the transferbox or the rear diff.Its worth the £250.00 (plus vat) extra if it is suspect because if it causes failure of the new unit, warranty claims can be difficult.
